Wooden Porticoes!

We were smitten with the portici in Bologna. They were everywhere! How cool is it that you never have to walk in the rain and you are protected from the sun’s rays! There are almost 25 miles of portici in the city. Many of the original wooden structures were converted to stone in the 16th century; but, go over to the Strada Maggiore and you can still see some of those original wooden porticoes.

Very important street

The streets runs as it was some 2000 years ago. This was part of Via Emilia, built by the romans. There are small coffe-shops, museums, churches on this famous street.

Towards the eastern exit of the city.

Strada Maggiore is the first stretch, the central one, of the Via Emilia in the section that connects Bologna to Rimini. It starts under the two towers and continues up to the Mazzini gate. It is porticoed for a long stretch on both sides and features stately and noble palaces along the route, among which Palazzo Davia Bargellini stands out, home to the museum of the same name and Palazzo Hercolani, home to the School of Political Sciences.
