And yet another Neptune fountain, this time in Emilio-Romagns region. It is a very beautiful fountain with Piazza Maggiore as a background. It is a short stop towards Piazza Maggiore and some snaps would be nice

One of the interesting things to see at Piazza Maggiore is the Neptune Fountain. This is the work of architect Tommaso Laureti and Giambologna (1563-66). It is a fairly typical depiction of the God of the Sea, a physical and commanding mythical specimen with trident.

Neptune stands upon a tiered pedestal with an accompaniment of putti, dolphins and nymphs sprouting water into a smaller basins which eventually spill into the ground level basin. It is an elegant fountain design that enjoyable to see when visiting Piazza Maggiore.

Situated in a pretty piazza, Neptune greets you as you enter. Lots of detail in the sculpture and worth a visit when visiting Bologna.

Fountain is dry, scaffolding is around so getting a photo is kinda tricky.
But it’s right there so ya can’t miss it. As a shellback-sailor-surfer, I had to stop by to honor.

Neptune statue is great to see in the main square/piazza in Bologna.

Visually really nice to see with amazing detail, you see so many of these types of statues in Italy and Europe so after a while you stop being amazed due to how regularly you see them.

This fountain was commissioned by the Cardinal Legate Charles Borromeo to celebrate the election of Pope Pius IV in 1559. The is made of marble and ornately decorated with bronze sculptures. The centrepiece of the fountain is a huge sculpture of Neptune, designed by Giambologna. Neptune is depicted as a naked giant holding a trident in his right hand. The sculpture is considered a symbol of the city and much reference in culture including the use of the trident as the emblem of Maserati.

Amazing statue, well crafted. A popular stop for people to view the fountain. I am impressed how well kept up the fountain was and clean.

My guess is most tourists will come across this statue as it’s in the centre of Bologna and everyone seems to congregate near here so it’s worth a stop and a snap!

Ok, it’s a bit rude but it is also a very good statue of Neptune with women spraying water out of their breasts. Since it is in the Piazza Maggiore you will walk past it anyway, and take your photos like the rest of humanity.

Nice statue in the centre of Bologna, just a stone's throw from Piazza Maggiore. Looks beautiful at sunset.
