Absolutely worth the time if you are in Bologna, even for a day. Make sure to read about the rebuilding and restauration efforts after the 1944 bombing. We had the extra luck that a couple of smaller exhibitions were open in the hallways of the building (one on opera characters and another on salami), very educational.

Archiginnasio is a hidden gem to visit in Bologna. It’s located near to piazza di Maggiore, approximately ten minutes walking distance. You can visit teatro anatomico and biblioteca comunale with just €6.00. It’s amazing how well maintain is a university who founded back 500 years ago.
I strongly recommend a visit.

Archiginnasio of Bologna is located at Piazza Galvoni just south of Piazza Maggiore in the city centre of Bologna. The building was constructed in the late 16th-century by architect Antonio Morandi and was the seat of the University of Bologna, the oldest continuously operating university in the world, for several centuries until later being repurposed as a municipal library for which the building still serves to this day.

You can visit the inner courtyard of Archiginnasio for free to enjoy the elaborate wall and ceiling frescos that line the portico, hall and stairways just inside. However, there are upstairs sections including the historic Anatomical theatre and the Sala dello Stabat Mater, lecture hall which require ticket purchase (€3 per person as of March 2024) to enter. These can be reserved in advance online or timed entry or you can try your luck at the ticket desk. Opening hours are 10am to 6pm daily.

Note: We tried walk in visit during a weekend and found them sold out on the day. We returned on Monday with online ticket reservations and found that it was possible to do walk-in visit on that day as most were there purchasing tickets on the spot, only a few of us had advance purchased tickets.

The teatro anatomico and sala dello Stabat Mater are something which cannot be missed. In the sala there are books from past scientists on display such ar Euclid's Elements, Lagrange's books and so on. Impressive.

Archiginnasio di Bologna is where you'll find the Anatomical Theatre and the Archiginnasio Municipal Library. It was once the centre of the University of Bologna. It's stairways and corridors are a joy to see and a visit here must be near the top of your 'to do' list in Bologna. Entrance is very cheap. €3 if I remember correctly.

The Archiginnasio is the most beautiful building in Bologna but often those who pass in front of its door only cast a distracted glance at the central portico.
Instead, you only need a few steps to be amazed by a long portico with many arches decorated with hundreds of coats of arms and two loggias on the upper floors.
It was built to give the University of Bologna a single and beautiful headquarters.
Once up the stairs you will find 10 classrooms that cannot be visited and the Library accessible only for study.
The two lecture halls are beautifully decorated.
The vaults, staircases and walls of the rooms are covered with coats of arms, inscriptions and monuments that celebrate the masters and students who passed through these classrooms.
Don't miss a visit to the anatomical theatre.

This morning, being on holiday, I took advantage of the holiday to return to the Archiginnasio, whose library I frequented when I was a student. I made a visit with audio guides downloadable with QR code and so I learned that the building was bombed in 1944. Being the ancient seat of the university (it was so until 1803) it is a particularly exciting place to visit for the people of Bologna. In addition to the library, worth seeing are the anatomical theater and the Aula Magna of the Stabat Mater.

Surely, being in Bologna, you cannot miss visiting this splendid building, home to the ancient University! The Anatomical Theater and the Stabat Mater can be visited, both spectacular! The ticket price is modest, only €3.00... sometimes, as happened to us, the Stabat Mater is busy with events, so we had to return in the afternoon, obviously keeping the ticket!

Wonderful library (a very reductive term) which for centuries was the University of Bologna: one of the oldest and most prestigious in the world. Historic building which is a jewel among the many jewels of this historic city. Only the portico of the Pavaglione which leads to the Archiginnasio and the elegant Piazza Galvani which is in front of it would be worth the visit.
Once you enter the courtyard you can "smell" the scent of history and culture. Thousands of coats of arms decorate the vaults and walls of the ancient university built by San Carlo Borromeo. The coats of arms remember illustrious and talented teachers. It contains thousands and thousands of historical volumes that today can only be used for study purposes.
Attached is the wonderful anatomical theater and the beautiful Stabat Mater room.
Must see in Bologna!!!

This place is an easy must-see. It's unfortunately not included in the Bologna Welcome card, but entrance is only €3. The anatomical theater was fascinating, and the collection of old books was amazing as well. Plan to spend 30-45 minutes here.
