There are many wonderful landmarks in Bologna; after all, being one of Italy's largest cities in terms of surface area and the Hub of Central Italy, it stands as one of oldest and most-important cities in Italy. With the many churches/basilicas in the city, the one for San Petronio probably holds the nicest object (and is also the biggest in... More

There are lots of renovations going on around and at the back the church and by its current look and being in the main piazza of Bologna does not look good from outside. Inside it is a huge, large nave with the distinctive colors of the city center and arches, lovely altar and the sun dial. It is so large... More

The Basilica has a stunning exterior and dominates a magnificent piazza. This gives an indication of how impressive it is. If you are visiting Bologna then it's highly likely that you will not want to miss out on the Piazza Maggiore, and the Basilica in particular. It's free to enter, but you will need to buy a €2 photo permit... More

Wonderful vaulted arches, a stunning altar piece and the world's longest sun dial. Those are just some of the reasons for visiting. I went back for a second visit, which is very unusual for me.

I believe that the Basilica is the 6th biggest in the world for dimension and, when you first enter, the sheer size strikes home. Not only is it long but wide and very tall. Possibly ironically though, it has a more secular claim to fame, in that it houses the longest sundial in the world at 67 metres long. As... More

Not the most beautiful or interesting place I've been. It's very grey and depressing inside and out, also don't bother paying €2 Euro to take pictures, it's really not worth it considering it's dark inside and dull.

Management response:

We really regret you didn’t enjoy our visit to the Basilica. San Petronio is a Gothic church (the construction started on 1390) full of art and history: among other things the major portal with the sculptures by Jacopo della Quercia (dated 15th century and a plaster cast of it, made in XIX century, is in the collections of Victoria&Albert Museum... Amazing architecture that can be admired from the square, close to other architectural and artistic attractions, like the Neptune Fountain/Statue. Interesting to see the two different materials in one construction - not that common in large and famous Italian monuments!

A spectacular cathedral, huge, gorgeous inside. You climb many stairs to her door, but the effort is worth it. The interior is opulent and make sure you wear something on your shoulders.
