What a beautiful main street in Bologna. A pleasurable 20-minute walk on one of the main shopping streets from Bologna Central Station. The street will lead you to the Neptune Fountain and Piazza Maggiore. If you visit during the weekend, it is closed to traffic and you’ll find plenty of street artists around. One of my favourite streets!

We walked this street many times on our way to and from the main tourist sites. It ends at Fontana del Nettuno in Piazza Maggiore. Along the way it is lined with shops, restaurants, beautiful buildings with stately arches, and several churches.

For us, this street is beautiful, with beautiful palaces, churches, cafes, restaurants, shops and above all its porticoes, protecting pedestrians on both sides of the street. This street has its unspeakable charm. Via dell Indipendenza is always very popular among Bologna people of all ages. Its history is very interesting. Since the mid-nineteenth century, several proposals had been made to create an artery linking the city center with the northern area, also in preparation for the construction of the railway station. Only after the unification of Italy did they materialize starting from the enlargement of Canton de 'Fiori, which took the name of via dell'Indipendenza in 1874, pending the extension of the new name to Malcontenti and Maddalena streets and to complete the artery. which would have led to the railway station passing through the ancient Piazza d'Armi (later Piazza Otto Agosto). The need to open a "via massima" in the heart of the city was spoken of in 1858, when the papal administration decided to place the station on the route considered the main one of the Via Emilia, close to the external part of the northern walls. The project for the new road to the station was presented to the municipal council by Coriolano Monti, in collaboration with Antonio Zannoni, at the end of 1861 and approved in 1862. But only in 1865 was the royal decree issued for the declaration of public utility. The package included the rearrangement of the entire area, called Orti Garagnani - between via del Porto and the Lame and Galliera gates. In 1884 the road was inaugurated, although not completely finished. The completed section involved the rectification of important buildings and the demolition of Palazzo Bonora. The demolition of the Hospice of San Giuseppe, known as the Casa dei Vecchi, will follow shortly. Furthermore, in 1886 a new facade with portico for the church of San Benedetto will be created, from which the apse and the bell tower will be demolished. The definitive completion of via Indipendenza will arrive only in 1888. Today is via dell Indipendenza is so beautiful.

In June 2016, I visited Bologna in Italy, for the first time. On Tuesday; the 7th of June 2016, about 12 noon, I had a coffee and a pizza at a café, on the main street, called Via dell'Indipendenza. I was sitting, at a table outside the café, under the arches.
After I finishes eating, I went into the café to pay the bill. I took out my wallet and handed over the cash. I then put my wallet back into the LEFT side pocket of my summer shorts and buttoned it. (I guess I was being watched.)
As I walked out of the restaurant, I had just been on the street for less than five minutes, when a lady approached me. She was begging for money. I told her I had no money to give her. She then came closer and started holding out her hand, very close to my face, I kept pushing her off, but she kept coming closer. with an open hand, she kept disturbing me and asking for cigarettes. I kept shouting at her and bushing her off. This went on for about two minutes. It was not until I finally pushed her off and walked a few yards, that I felt lighter and realised, that she was distracting me. She was on my RIGHT hand side. I checked for my wallet, in my LEFT pocket, but it was gone. Luckily I just had cash in there; no cards and no documents. I ran back to where she was, but she was gone as well.
She had distracted me on the RIGHT and someone had picked my pocket on the LEFT. I then saw two police officers and reported it. They directed me to the police station in the main square, where I got a written police report.
My advice, if you are visiting Bologna or anywhere else, for that matter. Once you are approached, by someone begging for money, when they get too close, hold on tight to your money, wallet, bag etc. Never put all the cash on you, in one wallet or purse. Always put wallets and purses in an inner pocket or a handbag. If it is taken, it is bigger and harder to hide. Finally; never carry your passport or documents around. If my passport was in my wallet, it would have been a bigger disaster.
As much as Bologna is a nice city, this ruined my first impression of Bologna.

This place reminded me of a cross between Piccadilly Circus because of the street performers and Oxford Circus because of the shopping and restaurants off the alleys! Although this is more historical and picturesque

Via Indipendenza is the main shopping street, with its clothes and accessories stores, cafeterias and fast food restaurants. You can't miss this street if you are in town.

Lots of shops along the Via Independenza, with stops for buses that run very regularly. A direct link to both the Via Rizzoli with even more shops, and also the Piazza Maggiore.

I like going around streets when I am abroad. My hotel is already on this street and I can reach everywhere. Now I learned that there will be a direct train from the airport soon. And always nice before christmas.
