Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Piazza Verdi looks tame enough by day, when young people hang out in the cafes or just sit on the pavement. At night it's more threatening, with boisterous groups in the square and their shady suppliers lurking on doorsteps in the arcades. In the morning it may be the dirtiest place in the city, but the heaps of trash, broken glass, and bottles are cleaned up fairly early and the cycle begins again.

If you're a tourist or new to the area and are looking for a piazza with a pleasant and authentic Bolognese vibe, head to Piazza San Francesco not here as Piazza Verdi is not for the faint hearted! It's normally full of young people drinking and doing the other things we do, you may even come across an impromptu rave or left wing demonstration! At nights, especially weekends, have your wits about you but you shouldn't run into trouble if you do as it's mainly a student hub with the expected stragglers and hagglers.

Students being students. Square is a little run down looking but the area is worth visiting for a sense of university life. Would be best to see in term time.

As other reviewers have said, steer clear of this filthy, unfriendly piazza. We were here around 7pm in summer and it was full of antagonistic drunks. We were accosted within seconds, and in the adjacent street moments later we saw an altercation. I really can't believe the local council do nothing about this threatening behaviour, since it's clearly been ongoing for years.

A shame for the whole city and in particular for the university. Historic drug dealing square, full of drug dealers in plain sight, of people vomiting, of people sleeping on the floor on dirty and greasy mattresses, with a smell of piss that will remain indelibly imprinted on anyone who has the misfortune to end up there. I recommend that groups of tourists stop at the open-air latrine at the beginning of Via del guasto.

This is a genuine warning to people wishing to visit this square in the evenings. The entire area is crawling with drug dealers, and people selling counterfeit strong spirits and other booze illegally. They are made up of gangs of aggressive men of Pakistani, Bangladeshi and North African origin. There was an article about this in the local paper recently, asking why the council wasn't doing anything about it. I have friends who were mugged by a group of 5 North African men in a side street just off the piazza just recently. I've seen the same gangs throwing bottles of beer into the air randomly. Don't rely on the police to do anything. Steer well clear of here after dusk

This is a typical Piazza close to University campus full of young people not as touristy but lively, clean and imbued with architecture and character.

Liked this square a lot because it has a special atmosphere. The heart of the University area. It's not the grandest square in Bologna, maybe even a bit worn. But nevertheless a place close to the university filled with students along with other people. There is no chic about this place but you really have the opportunuty to have a mundane experience instead. The place has a best before date discretion and there is no lack of beautiful buildings around the Piazza, like Teatro Communale di Bologna, Palazzo Paleotti and the Basilica di San Giacomo Maggiore. Easy to reach since it's close to the "Due Torri".
