Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is one of my favourite galleries I have visited so far whilst travelling Italy. The staff were so so nice and helpful. I spent over an hour taking in the amazing works. I walked in to a new room even more stunned than the last. A lot of beautiful renaissance art and pieces. Definitely recommend, and for young adults its only 2 euros.

The Galleria d’Este is a must see. There is never anyone in there but it has been brilliantly rehung by the current director who has got it all right. The lighting is good, the selection of works is of very high quality and it is not so big that it is exhausting, so that you can take your time on each work. Don’t miss the stunning Bernini portrait of Francesco d’Este. And it is well worth going to Sassuolo to see the frescoes in the d’Este palace there, including the wonderful gallery by Boulanger, one of the best unknown masterpieces in Italy.

What a collection! This museum surpassed my expectations. The museum is on the top floor of a large palazzo in Modena and actually opened in 1884! The family collection includes many paintings from the 14th to 18th C. as well as sculptures, artifacts and decorative treasures. The entire collection will take a couple hours to see, but it is not so large you can't do it on a day trip to Modena.

The Picture Gallery of the Estense family was one of the most beautiful in the world. Unfortunately, in 1744 the libertine Duke Francesco III decided to raise some money by selling the 100 most valuable paintings of the gallery. So you have to go to Dresden to see them. But there still are some wonderful paintings by Correggio, Guercino, Guido Reni (and many of his wonderful pupils), Veronese, Tintoretto, El Greco, Velazquez... Check also the wonderful musical instruments! And the Estense Library still possesses the most beautiful book collection in the world, including famous illuminated books like the Bible of Borso d'Este and the mysterious treatis De Sphaera. They are exposed in old cabinets with no explanations but they are still worth a visit. The Galleria and the Biblioteca are not very famous and the city is doing its best to discourage tourists, but do your best to visit them! The Biblioteca exposition usually is open only in the morning and you have to ask to someone to open it for you (I'm not kidding). Check the websites because perhaps they are still closed since the 2011 earthquake... Many paintings are probably still in the Palazzo Ducale in Sassuolo, a town near Modena, which is worth a visit too.

Not really promoted in travel guides but well worth a visit. Large collection of archeological pieces from roman era as well as paintings and artifacts. Enjoyed the old books, manuscripts and maps in that part of the collection. A couple of hours minimum to cover what is on display. English guidance limited but hope the helpful volunteer we had is there.

This gallery has a surprisingly extensive collection of Old Master paintings - including Veronese, El Greco, Tintoretto and Reni. It's laid out chronologically in a series of rooms on the top floor of the museum building. There's plenty of information in English. You need a couple of hours to see everything properly.
The Palazzo dei Musei has other museums to visit, including the Musei Civici (diverse collection of applied and fine art) and Bibiloteca Estense (ancient books and manuscripts). There's a cafe and shop available.

Beautiful collection in a renovated space that just reopened this May following being closed for three years due to earthquake damage. The museum is well worth a detour to Modena for art travelers as there are some real gems on exhibit here.

I visited it for the first time on the day of the reopening 3 years after the earthquake, and the following days, thanks to the Notti Barocche events. All the collection is very interesting, but the statue by Bernini is absolutely a must, and it is worth the travel to Modena.

We were the only visitors in the gallery for the entirety of our visit, so we had silence to read all the information and take our time with the art.
