Great collection, now beautifully displayed

The Galleria d’Este is a must see. There is never anyone in there but it has been brilliantly rehung by the current director who has got it all right. The lighting is good, the selection of works is of very high quality and it is not so big that it is exhausting, so that you can take your time on each work. Don’t miss the stunning Bernini portrait of Francesco d’Este. And it is well worth going to Sassuolo to see the frescoes in the d’Este palace there, including the wonderful gallery by Boulanger, one of the best unknown masterpieces in Italy.

Wonderful visit

Worth going in, the artifacts there are just amazing, including musical instruments. The pictures of the d'Este family are interesting to look at after reading about them.

Incredible collection and hardly any visitors
Mar 2018 • Friends
The museum was formed around the collection of paintings owned by the Este family, particularly Italian and local paintings ranginging from the 14th to 18th centuries. We saw some really interesting and famous pieces and were happy to have had a free guided tour included in the ticket.

Small art collection which is well displayed
Mar 2018 • Couples
No top works, and very few works of art by the great names; instead mostly local (northern Italian) artists are presented. The works are very well displayed, and it is quiet and small enough that one can have a good look at all of the works one is interested in. Ideal time spend if it rains. Information is only in Italian.

Small but perfectly formed.

A small, high quality collection of paintings and other works of art collected by a local noble family. Well worth a visit. Some monumental works and some small and intricate pieces. Unusual terracotta statuary incluing polychromes.

Spent a very enjoyable two hours here.

The Galleria Estense is located in the Palace of Museums. It is found on the upper gallery floor and there is an admission charge. The galleries are laid out in chronological order from the 13th to the 18th century. There is a good sprinkling of masterpieces. I especially enjoyed Francesco I d'Este by Velasquez and the portable altar by El Greco, although all parts of Italy are well represented, together with Flemish and German artists. I spent two enjoyable hours here.

To take a break from heat and crowds, we visited this museum in the afternoon, and spent about 2 hours admiring the art collection. Nice museum to visit if you have time.

A very nice art collection
Sep 2017 • Couples
This is a nice art collection from the 14-15th century +16th century. Artists like Corregio, Bassano, Tintoretto and others. Many artists from the area that are not well known to the public but are very good nevertheless. Yona S.
