You will get lost in an ocean of paintings (some even from famous artists!) as well as in the big library, filled with many ancient volumes! The complete visit takes a whole morning. Reduced prices for young people between 18 and 25, and for underage people the entrance is free!Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 2 November 2023
- Talia15 contributionsPilotta - A must seeThe Palazzo della Pilotta was by far the best place I visited during my stay in Parma. It is just a few minutes walk from La Piazza della Ghiaia. Whether you're visiting with family, friends or solo. I definitely recommend spending some time here. Walk through the buildings breathtaking arches before entering the museum, which only costs €2. See works from artists such as MichealAngelo on the guided walk through the museum of floor to ceiling paintings. It also has very interesting artefacts and ancient pottery. A lot of the art have Italian and English description plaques but not all. Even if you're not visiting the museum the area is surrounded by charming cafes, restaurants and gelato shops. I spent my days lazing around the grass reading and eating gelato by the marble statues. Even if you don't plan on visiting the Pilotta, you'll likely end up finding your way here anyway if you're just walking around.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 25 March 2024

quite a deception..
The palazzo from the outside is an ugly brick building, and inside is not close to any palace or castle i’ve seen before.
The only noticeable piece worth seeing is the Leonardo da vinci inside the national gallery.
But be ready to be forced to pay a ticket including the palazzo, the national gallery, the farnese theater, the archeological museum… you cant buy single tickets..
Be warn also that they sell the ticket even if some of the things you pay for are closed, and of course they dont tell you.. ( happened to me i wanted to see the archeological museum, and specially the « tabula alimentaria », but discovered once inside that the whole arch. museum was closed!!
what a rip off.
my advice: go visit the « teatro regio di parma » way nicer, the cathedral, and all other nicer places.

We visited the building which houses several collections on a hot summer day with two young children. Although we understand that CoronaChecks are required in the current situation, we found the attitude of the persons in charge of access control very formal and bureaucratic. Therefore it took an inordinate amount of time to get clearance. The museum complex is very large and houses a large number of artworks. We were most impressed with the Teatro Farnese and a number of paintings in the National Gallery. There is a lot of Medieval religious art, which will not appeal to everyone. It is a pity that there is not a museum Cafe, where visitors can enjoy a drink and a snack.

We only had time to visit the Farnese theatre but it was worth paying the entrance fee just to see this amazing theatre built in Wood and in wonderful condition. Can say nothing about the rest but apparently lots to see!!

The Palazzo della Pilotta houses more museums inside. I recommend spending a whole day visiting such museums and buying the all-inclusive ticket of 17 Euros which, you can believe me, are really well spent. The recommended route starts at the top of the first flight of stairs in front of the ticket office with the archaeological museum, which exhibits many artifacts from prehistory to the barbarian invasions; especially what was found during excavations of the ancient city of Veleia. It's pretty complete. Then the tour of the building continues with the Teatro Farnese, which is just opposite the entrance to the archaeological museum and which is the centerpiece of the whole complex; the first theater in Italy with the moving scenes and the third oldest indoor theater in the peninsula. To conclude, behind the stage of the Teatro Farnese is the entrance to the art gallery, which displays HUNDREDS of objects, mostly paintings, mainly purchased during the nineteenth century. The paintings start from the fourteenth century (many by Tuscan authors) and reach up to the last century. The most famous are "La scapigliata", a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci, and the statue with the portrait of Maria Luigia D'Asburgo that generally appear in the history books of the nineteenth century. If you can see it all in one day, remember that inside the Palazzo della Pilotta there would also be the Palatine Library and the Bodonian Museum. In conclusion, the building is worth a visit.

The Monumental complex of Pilotta from the 16th century. You enter with a single ticket and inside you will find: Archaeological Museum, Farnese Theatre, National Gallery, Palatine Library and the Bodoni Museum.
The archaeological museum houses precious material from the excavations of the Roman city of Veleia, Etruscan material, Ancient Egyptians. Farnese Theater of 1618 is equipped with an engineering system for mobile scenography. The Palatine library of 1769 unique collection of incunabula and manuscripts. The National Gallery is part of the Farnese collection with the greatest Parma, Italian and Flemish artists of various eras. It took us more than two hours to visit everything and we skipped the Bodoni museum.

The receptionist refused to sell me the ticket for young people even though I’am 25. He looked at my id told me I’m 26 based on the year of birth.
Even after I explained that year of birth is not the same thing as the age he still said that I had to pay the full price for the ticket and that the discount is only until the age of 24 (not what it says on the website).
I don’t know if is because I’m a tourist but I felt a little discriminated.

The palace is beautiful and the different sites to visit are interesting but the Award of 18€ is high for the time you spend there. We were very disappointed at the few works exhibited at the National Gallery. The theater is beautiful.
As for the Bodioni Museum and the library, the tour is quickly made. The archaeological museum is quite extensive but ancient works are not among our interests.
The next day we visited the Davia Bargellini Museum in Bologna which presents a beautiful collection of paintings and various objects. It was free and interested us much more.

Buona visita
