If you are a fan of Dante Alighieri, I think you will enjoy this quiet beautiful place and monument to the Supreme Poet. It’s right on the left side of the Basilica di San Francesco if you are facing it. Across it is also a tiny park kind of area where you can find some modern artworks dedicated to Dante. Definitely worth a visit. Wonderful place.

Dante Alighieri is probably the major Italian poet, and his tomb has a big historical significance, and it is a National Monument. However, the current tomb is not much to see: it was built in 1780-1781 above the former 15th century structure, and it is quite simple.
Next to Dante's tomb is the quadrarch of Braccioforte (strong arm) is an oasis of peace. Several marble sarcophagi from the 5th-6th century and later reused.
Two cloisters are also nearby, called the Franciscan cloisters, also very peaceful and beautiful.

Of course you visit Dantes Tomb when in Ravenna yet it is not a very special one. Building surrounding makes visiting this Tomb a must.

A nice park with a tomb where often verses are cited at sunset - and a bell rings 13 times at sunset in memory of Italy‘s maybe greatest poet. The grave has an interesting history as Dante, banned and death sentenced in Florence, fled to Ravenna and died there - but his remains were later claimed by Florence and hidden secretly by monks close to the tomb.

The tomb is impressive but the sculpture of the Cerberus next door is even better. On a tour in Florence the guide lamented that the people of Ravenna would not return his body after death and I don’t think she appreciated my input of “but he did his best work in Ravenna and they respected and treasured him more than the people of Florence and he didn’t want to leave after death”.

Walking around Ravenna we found Dante's tombstone by coincidence. An impressive monument with several explanations about the work of Dante.

Pick up a free map of Ravenna at the Tourist Information and they will mark the location of Dante's tomb - a short walking distance from the TI office. Durante degli Alighieri, known as Dante - c. 1265–1321), was a major Italian poet of the Middle Ages. His Divine Comedy, originally called La Comedia and later called Divina by Boccaccio, is most likely the greatest literary work composed in the Italian language and a masterpiece of world literature. In Italy he is known as il Sommo Poeta ("the Supreme Poet") or just il Poeta. It's a beautiful marble enclosed tomb. Photos permitted.

I'll admit right now that Dante does not mean a lot to me personally. I certainly understand and appreciate his incredibly central role in the development of literature and language in general. But his tomb, though attractive, is not spectacular to see in and of itself. The attraction is free, and because all the major sites in Ravenna are close together, it's unlikely you would take more than 15 minutes out of your day to visit this site.
If you are a lover of Dante, then this site might mean much more to you. It might even be a moving experience. I appreciate that, and would heartily recommend a true appreciator of Dante to stop by and pay your respects. But if you are not, like me...then unless you've got lots of extra time, don't make put this at the top of your list. See the magnificent mosaics of Ravenna first.
(As a side note, many of the reviews here mention the crowds. We were in Ravenna in late August, and Italy overall was packed with tourists. But when we stopped by the tomb, there were less than 10 other folks in the vicinity. It's next to a small, but shaded little park that has its own mildly interesting history...so based on OUR experience, this is actually a place to get a little quiet and shade.)
If you are a lover of Dante, then this site might mean much more to you. It might even be a moving experience. I appreciate that, and would heartily recommend a true appreciator of Dante to stop by and pay your respects. The grave itself is not so special ( too modern), but the church and the surroundings are nice. Tourism office is around the corner, which is very practical.

A small monument marks the genius of Italian literature. Dante is to Italians the same as Shakespeare to the English! Allegedly, he lies under a heap of earth with ivy on it. A bell at dusk honours this important figure of the worldwide culture every day.
