Another great site in Ravenna, Italy. The Baptistry of Neon (Italian - Battistero Neoniano) is a religious octagonal baptistery built in the 5th century. It is the oldest monument in Ravenna and contains some of the city's most beautiful Byzantine mosaics and was partly erected...More

It is hard to imagine how old these mosaics are and what life was like at the time. Ravenna is full of such treasures.

A fantastic set of mosaics in a beautiful building - the baptismal pool is apparently an old Roman bath. Probably my favorite of the mosaics in Ravenna.

This battisterio full of symbols is worth the walk out of the center of Ravenna. We were lucky to hear the symbols explained by a gifted teacher to her attentive class of young pupils

This was my favorite of the Ravenna mosaics. Small chapel with mosaics almost covering. Incredible detail, particularly of Jesus baptism.

The mosaics are superb, and it is clear from the layout how the baptisms worked - there is a marble-lined area for the (empty) baptism pool. There are seats around the walls (wonderful for tired tourists). It is hard to see now that there was...More
