The Basilica of San Giovanni Evangelista was built by the Roman princess Galla Placidia in the fifth century AD. The history of church construction is extremely interesting. A marble inscription on the church of San Giovanni Evangelista indicates to us that Galla Placidia (392-450) built this church in memory of the shipwreck survivor, herself and her children. Their Journey took place from Constantinople to Ravenna after the death of her brother Honorio to take over the kingdom of the Western Empire instead of her son Valentinian, who was then too young. Some mosaics are unfortunately lost, but the church is a wonderful example of early Christian architecture. In the Middle Ages, the Benedictines added an important monastery to it. In the 14th century, both the church and the monastery were rebuilt in the Gothic style, because of these interventions, a beautiful portal is visible.

This is one of the ancient churches in the world! Really beautiful. The inside is plain but the outside and the garden are very nice. I believe it is worth to visit it!

Well worth a visit. Quite plain. Some lovely newer paintings in old style in one chapel. Highly recommend you go here.

The Basilica of St. John the Evangelist was originally founded in 426 AD, and is the oldest church in Ravenna. During the 16th century the church was renovated according to the Gothic style (the access portal is still there, and it is very beautiful).
It was almost destroyed during WW II bombings, and it was rebuilt later, with recovered materials.
Today the church is almost naked, with some floor mosaics transported to the side walls.

Although much of the structure of the church is ancient, it contains none of the decoration of other churches in the city and is therefore not as exciting.

It said 425, if I remember correctly, whereas the others are built in 430. We literally stumbled on it, on our way from the Railway station to the major landmarks.
This one may not be so impressive as other major sites, but it's worth paying a visit. The door is impressively sculpted, and it has beautiful wooden ceilings.
Also, it appears have a more or less permanent musical score. When we visited, int he first days of 2017, it features Christmas songs. In English. A surprisingly modern touch to such an ancient place- surprisingly enough, it did not spoil the feeling.

Not as spectacular as others, still worth a visit. Even though partly reconstructed after WWII, still an impressive building

I was dumbfounded at the number of mosaics housed here! Not usually on the top 10 list for Ravenna, but I would definitely put it in that category!

This church has stunning fragments of ancient mosaics. Although old they are well displayed. This church suffered great damage during WW2.

the basilica di St John is relatively new because it was damaged in the war. The mosaics displayed on the wall however are old and astonishing. Weird creatures and men fighting are displayed in a child-like but comprehensive way. It was truly astonishing
