The arch of Augustus is the impressive gateway to the what was the Roman City

It now stands by the remains of the old town walls where there is a small park and cycling track

After walking through the centre on the Saturday market we were greeted with the magnificent ancient entrance to the ancient town of Rimini. How it’s still standing is amazing. I imagined approaching this for the first time when it was first built and how people would be impressed by the size.

Large ancient gate that leads to the Main Street of Rimini that is steeped in history.

Oldest remain gate in northern Italy from Caesar period.

Very photogenic bridge that is good to see during the day for night. Detail in bridge art work is amazing to see.

Certainly an engineering feat for its time.

The Arco d'Augusto is the oldest surviving triumphal gate in Northern Italy and was once the city entrance of the Flaminian Way. Interesting features of the gate is the size of the opening as well as sculptures of Zeus, Apollo and Neptune

The Arco d'Augusto is the oldest surviving arch in northern Italy, dating from 27 BC.
It was built of brick and white marble and served as a city gate.

Its peculiarity is the fact that the arch is so large that a lockable gate could not be installed in it - at least at that time. It shows that Emperor Augustus really practiced a policy of peace so much so that the city was in no danger of being attacked.

An arch through time. Situated next to a park and near the center of the city sits the beautiful Arch. Hard to believe that it was built 2000 years ago and still stands today. A true jewel of the city

Beautiful Arch of Augustus ( Arco d'Augusto ), together with the Tiberius Bridge, is one of the oldest Roman symbols of Rimini, as well as a fundamental reference point for the whole city. The monument is in fact located in the historic center, at the end of the Corso d'Augusto, which crosses the entire center until it reaches the Tiberius bridge. It has four shields or round portraits from Roman times, in which the four deities are depicted: Jupiter, recognizable by the lightning symbol; Apollo, depicted with zither and crow; Neptune, recognizable by the trident and the dolphin, and finally the Goddess of Rome, represented with the sword and the weapon trophy. A wonderful example of Roman history that we can enjoy.

A magnificent Roman arch at the entrance to the historic old town of Rimini.

Having been to Rome and seen and absorbed the history from the Via del Corso, the old Via Flaminia, which makes its way right up through Italy to Rimini, has a magical feeling when you think of the Roman soldiers marching all that way……

When we see these ancient buildings everyday we do tend to take them for granted without realising the importance and history that they give us today.

To some it maybe just the entrance to the market, but it has so much more significance and is the oldest surviving Roman arch in Italy, being more than 2000 years old.
