Visited church part of my walking tour. It was a little challenging to find if you don’t pay good attention but this is a must see. The church was welcoming and traditional. You can see so much history inside and outside of church. It is also close to other historical spots and the view of the city from the church is one of the best in Trieste

I really enjoyed the visit to San Giusto! The cathedral itself is a wonderful example of early medieval architecture and the bell tower climb will get you to amazing views of the gulf. The main mosaic inside is quite recent but very striking, and one of the niches is covered by an older mosaic that is very impressive. The bell tower inside is also quite interesting, having been built around and on top of a pre-existing roman building of which you can still see the vestiges.

This is a very old cathedral, inside there are some incredible mosaics depicting Christians the 12 apostles. For one euro they can be lit up, well worth it. There is also a separate bell tower which we didn't go in but looked interesting

Stunning location at the top of a hill overlooking Trieste.
We walked up from the town which is quite a difficult trek uphill on cobbled and uneven streets. However it was worth the effort. The Cathedral is beautiful and near to the ruins of the castle and the war memorial.

Beautiful cathedral with lovely mosaics. Shame about allowing guided tours through that show little respect to the church - loud guide with tourist crowd following her around. Respect the silence please...

St. Justus Church is the cathedral of Trieste and thus the seat of the bishop of the pertinent diocese. It’s an imposing edifice of romanesque style with a sober façade which must necessarily arouse the visitors’ interest. The gothic elements were added posteriously as a consequence of a partial destruction caused by an earthquake.
The first religious building on the site dates from the sixth century. There was apparently on the same place a Roman temple whose structure was conveniently used. Later on, between the ninth and the eleventh centuries two basilicas were constructed, one of them devoted to Our Lady of the Assumption and the other one to St. Justus which were linked together in the fourteenth century.
The basilica has five aisles, the central nave having been built precisely to unite the two prior churches thus resulting in the cathedral of St. Justus. On the façade, over the main entrance, there is a large gothic rose window which is a beautiful sample among such a kind of architectural elements. Apart from that, as part of the façade decoration there are bas-reliefs from the Roman time and a statue of the Saint also from the fourteenth century. A large bell tower is predominant in the church outer part.
In the church interior the wooden roof is quite remarkable. Besides, it’s possible to observe inside decorations from various periods, including a mosaic in line with the Byzantine mosaics in Ravenna. As regards mosaics, by the way, that in St. Justus Chapel is really magnificent. It dates back to the twelfth or thirteenth century and in it the figure of Christ stands out on a golden background.
As all romanesque buildings the interior is not very bright insofar as the daylight doesn’t come inside profusely, but still there is enough light for one to be able to observe all relevant details, among which the semicircle arches characteristic of that style. They are supported by four ranges of round shaped columns thus dividing the church into the stated five aisles. The columns end with capitals of divers forms, some of them containing acanthus leaf motifs. The whole is indeed very harmonious and of a great beauty.
Walking outside by the church is also very pleasant, particularly along the large terrace lying on the church west side towards St. Justus Castle. At the end of that promenade there is the possibility to behold a superb view over the city of Trieste and its harbour. Likewise, in the square in front of the church there is an altar commemorating a military event and a monument to the ones who died in the First and the Second World Wars.
The place is therefore very interesting from all points of view. That’s why its visit can be deemed a must if ever in or near Trieste.

The cathedral is located in the old town, the heart of Trieste, with a history dating back more than a thousand years. The cathedral was created by the joining of two basilicas. The mosaics inside are beautiful. The Carlist pretenders to the throne of Spain are also buried here. If you are visiting the nearby museum-fort, be sure to stop at this cathedral dedicated to the patron saint of Trieste, Justus the Martyr. Note that it’s quite a climb by foot to reach the cathedral, but well worth it. You can also get here by public bus.

I found the Cathedral's history fascinating and its position above the Medieval town and the more modern part of Trieste quite breath-taking. This might have also been due to the facgt that I reached the Cathedral by way of the Scala dei Giganti! I do not give it more than four stars because I come from Durham City in the North East of England which has a Cathedral beyond compare!

Gentile viaggiatore,
mi sono recata durante il giorno e la cattedrale era aperta.
Non posso darle con esattezza gli orari, ma alle ore 13.40 la chiesa era aperta.
Cordiali saluti
