This landmark statue of St Francis of Assisi stands high above Monterosso and looks down over the old town and out across the Ligurian Sea. From here, you have a breathtakingly panoramic view. It is also a beautifully serene spot.
The walk up is steep but its short and is absolutely worth it. The path is very manageable and the climb is gradual.
The start of the path was not immediately obvious to us. From the old town side, we found it just before the entrance to the pedestrian tunnel that links the old and new towns. As you head towards the tunnel, the path is on your left but is tucked away behind the buildings.
Apart from the amazing view, the statue itself is a relatively modern bronze piece. In 1960 Fr Daniele da Pra from the Convent of Monterosso, had the vision of a large devotional statue dedicated to St. Francis and the artist Silvio Monfrini was commissioned. The bronze was cast in Lombardy, then parcelled up and transported by train to Monterosso in 1962. It must have been a difficult job to put it in place. Apparently crowds turned out to watch.
The statue shows a famous scene from St Francis’ life when he tamed the vicious wolf of Gubbio. The saint bows down slightly to greet, or perhaps to bless, the wolf. In return, the wolf, instead of snarling or lunging for the saint’s throat, holds a submissive paw up.
The statue is placed on a small balcony like platform and from here, you can look down upon the 16th century Torre Aurora. A little higher up, above the statue, is the Capuchin Friars Monastery and church.
The first time we visited Monterosso, we didn’t walk up here. Probably having hiked all day long, we thought we’d walked enough already. What a mistake that was and I’m very glad that we did it this time around.

Nice hike and views from the top. The statue is unique with the fact that the Saint is with his pet dog wondering nature.

Monumento a San Francesco d'Assissi is a statue located in the coastal path in Monterosso al Mare, one of the five towns in Cinque Terre National Park, in La Spezia Region, in the North of Italy. In fact, it is located near from Church of San Francesco, in a upper zone in the town, so from here you can see very beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea. The statue is normal, not more, better the views and coastal path.

We visited this beautiful spot by chance, found the stairs off to the left as we got off the ferry. A gradual climb leads to remarkable views of the town, boats, and the sea! Continue up the trail leads to more views, a church and cemetery which is worth your efforts, you won’t be disappointed!

I am big fan of St. Francis and this is a great monument to him with one of his beloved animals. It’s a climb up some steps but the view is magnificent. Don’t miss it.

The view high up there is gorgeous. The climb up there can be physically taxing but you will be well compensated with the gorgeous view. You can easily snap some of the best pictures high up there. I am glad that I made this journey up and took some of the most panoramic view of Monterosso Village.

Those familiar with the story of St. Francis and the wolf of Gubbio will appreciate this bronze statue. Those unfamiliar will still enjoy breathtaking views of the harbor and a decent uphill hike to get there :) Bring water, there are shaded places to stop & refresh. PLEASE if you continue up to the church, be respectful of the requirements and cover up (there are signs posted if you do not speak Italian). No tanks, short shorts/minis in the church. Ladies may want to pack a scarf or sarong to cover shoulders.

We spent the day hiking and at the end of the day we stopped by San Martino Gastronomia for take out food. We got a bottle of wine and headed up the mountain to the Monument. We sat at the base of San Francesco and had our picnic and enjoyed the sunset that sat behind us over the mountain. It was peaceful and an amazing end to a beautiful day in Cinque Terre. Probably one of the most memorable experiences in Monterosso. Just us, great food and Blessed San Francesco looking down at the world.

Because everything in Monterosso al Mare is so easy and close, you may as well stop here on your way up to the church. The statue is quite imposing and the view is fantastic.
