Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We went from Riomaggiore (from our stay) up the stairs to the road and up the next stairs to the church. The stairs are old and picturesque and the views are beautifull along the way. But the top of the hill is best, nice pines and the church provide for a calm place. The view from the top is amazing, you can see far both sides of the coast.
Definitelly worth the effort.
I recommend setting of early, this side of the hill is in shade during the morning. In the aftermoon, the stairs are in full sun.
You can go back to the village via another trail that is stony and wide and not so steep.

The Sanctuary of Montenero is apart of the history of Riomaggiore. It dates back to the 14th century. Today it has three naves that are separated by pillars and a five-arched portico. You can arrive only on foot from the foot path that starts near Volastra or coming down from the Colle del Telegrafo. You can catch the bus from Riomaggiore towards Biasa that stops below the hill.
This scared place is special for the local people because it is here that thanks were expressed to the Virgin for protecting their family members working abroad. Most men left to work onboard of cruise liners or shipping vessels. It greatly helped the families. Pentecost is celebrated here on the seventh Sunday after Easter. The Spring harvest is celebrated by the Israelis in this time period. These rites celebrated by different religions, young and old, with the same thoughts and unity in mind.
The panoramic views are breathtaking and memorable. It is a great place for a picnic or a simple visit. The Sanctuary is not always open.

This trail is listed as easy but it has some work to it. It is easier to take a clockwise route on this path. The route consists of paths: #3, #3a. This route takes a more gradual climb were the other side is very steep with a lot of stairs. It took about 45 minutes to climb to the top. The church was closed the day we were there. You can see the complete coast line from the top. Also not to many people there. Wear good shoes and bring water to drink. There is a good amount of sunshine as you walk so sunscreen is an option.

Some tips:
- have good shoes
- it will take you 45 minutes up, it is tiresome (approx 300m up), but rewarding
- take some time to visit the cemetery halfway - interesting and typical for this area (have never seen anything like this before)
- watch out when crossing the roads - cars go fast
- enjoy the view from the 180degrees bar (around 2/3 of the way up)
- when arriving at the church just enjoy :)
- the road down will take you 30 minutes

We went up the path from the top of the town which was challenging for us, luckily it wasn't too hot. The church was not open went we arrived, about 11am. The views however were beautiful.
We returned to Riomaggiore by the path directly in front of the church which was extremely rough and hard going. We would have been better off returning by the same route.
Worth the view.

Why? The usual - views. You get a glimpse not only on the 5 towns of Cinque Terre, but the Portovenere way as well. Add a little cherry on top - no hordes of tourists. The drawback is you got to pick your spot carefully due to vegetation that interferes with the line of sight. I would recommend stopping while climbing from the bus stop (should you take the easier option) - there are some better spots than the Santuario itself. How? By climbing from Riomaggiore or taking a bus from it and then climbing for another 15-20 minutes. Take into account that even the latter may be challenging in the heat, especially given that places you can rest in the shade are pretty rare. The site itself seems deserted - tap water would be nice, yet, forget about it.

Loved the place! Our rental was right over the boat ramp and had wonderful views. Be prepared for lots of steep stairs. Would definitely go back!

Short hike from the road (you can choose longer hike from the port) to the top of the hill for amazing views over Riomaggiore and the coast. Worth the effort, some of the steps were steep, to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and views. Beautiful!

beautiful place with lovely views across the coast
not tiring walk to get to the sanctuary of about forty-five minutes, I think it is preferable to do it in the morning

Ho intenzione di venire a visitare il Santuario partendo da Deiva Marina a cavallo.
Vorrei sapere se il sentiero dal telegrafo al santuario è percoribile a cavallo. Per favore considerate l'altezza di una persona a cavallo.
