Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Before the construction of the castle, Rapallo did not have a real system of walls but was considered a walled village for its urban structure: “Village without walls but very safe for its narrow steps” wrote in the fifteenth century a chancellor of the Republic of Genoa. The access to the village was regulated by five doors and the one called “delle Saline” is the only surviving one with its decoration redone in Baroque style. To see but you have to go there.

In 1629 the Republic of Genoa proclaimed Rapallo to be a "walled town". There were 5 gates - 4 of these have been destroyed and the Porta delle Saline is the only surviving gate. Well worth a look.

One of only two remaining (although we couldn’t find the other) gates to the old walled city. Easily missed but worth checking out if you’re into this sort of thing. I’ve spent enough time looking at and for remaining wall parts from the old city of London so this is interesting for me.
Situated towards the western end of the front.

A beautiful entrance portal to the city, nice baroque architecture, looks almost as an altar, a nice attraction to enter on Piazza IV Novembre; an explaining plaque is fixed on the wall.

Sure, everybody (almost) loves the Castello di Rapallo around the corner from here. And yes, from the street side you have absolutely no clue that this even exists. We stayed at the Tigullio Royal Hotel that actually adjoins this portal. Which by the way is a great place to stay. The first time we walked through this portal was from the street side. Didn't even turn around and notice it. On the way back could not believe it. What a great architectural detail.

We must have walk under it at least 6 times before noticing this porta. Especially if you are entering from the port side. Nothing special but still worthy of a picture as it is still fascinating how people were able to sculpture these beautiful things.

Most people walk thru this port and never notice how unique it looks . Normal on the one side but yet beautiful on the other . If you walk around a little then you will find it .

Interesting former city gate, not overly impressive but worth a stroll through and read the history on an adjacent wall placque.
