The most beautiful church I have ever been to
I have been to many beautiful churches and seen a lot of incredible architecture in my life so far, but this is definitely the most beautiful church I have ever seen. The outside is magnificent, but the true beauty is the interior. The main basilica is absolutely stunning, but all the walls and ceilings are also covered with elaborate and stunning frescoes, statues and paintings. It is a beautiful church, with only a €2 entrance fee. I could’ve spent hours in the church, it was genuinely breathtaking. A must visit.

    Breathtaking!
Absolutely breathtaking is the only way to describe this stunning place of worship. For anyone interested in Sacred places and beautiful architecture this is a 'must see'! There is a charge of €5 per adult but it is well worth the cost.

A basilica without a main facade, but with Donizetti.
The main church of the Upper Town dates back to the 12th century, as its Romano-Lombard exterior recalls. It was originally built as a baptismal church at the cathedral. Its initially secondary role was manifested in the fact that the basilica has no central entrance and no main facade at all. You can take the beautiful Renaissance Colleoni chapel for it, but it is an independent building built on the site of the demolished apse of this basilica. What awaits you inside is not what awaits you outside. In the XVII-XVIII centuries, the church was rebuilt and it received a Baroque interior, although the frescoes of the XIV century have been preserved. There is one painting by the artist Luca Giordano in the basilica. However, the most important "feature" of the church is the grave of Donizetti. The famous composer, a native of Bergamo, is not accidentally buried here. His introduction to music took place at the charity choir school for boys under the guidance of the German composer Simon Mayr, the kapellmeister of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore. And even the requiem for Bellini's death, commissioned by Donizetti, was first performed within the walls of this particular church.

    Beautifully decorated
The altars are beautiful, the ceilings are spectacular. The paintings, especially in the side chapels, are lovely. There are frescos. But we were most impressed by the number of picturesque tapestries that adorn the walls. It feels like every square inch is covered with some kind of ornamentation. Well worth the €5 entry fee.

The Silver medal of the Piazza
This had been a sacred place for a long time, with a previous Romanic church and a Roman temple on the spot. For the present day basilica, you can find the year 1137 carved in the Lions Gate. You can enter the building by the side doors; the Lions Gate is the one facing the Duomo Piazza, but the later Fontana Gate is also worth a look, going around the block. The facade, attached to Colleoni´s chapel, is beautiful by itself, but the latter stands out. I was concerned about all the children playing to ride and jump from the 14C reddish Veronese marble lions. Before getting in, admire the 3 saints statues (St Barbara, St Vincent and St Alexander) and the Virgin and Child upon them, with 2 more saints. The Baroque interior show Flemish tapestries. The transept chancels and the carved confessionary are masterpieces. It’s free of charge, but a donation is expected,

    most beautiful church in Bergamo
You should check out the many churches that Bergamo has to offer. One is more impressive than the other. The best place to start is Piazza Duomo, where several churches are located together. Particularly beautiful is the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. There is a small entrance fee for this one - all the others, including the Duomo, were free to visit.

Wow!! What a beautiful catholic basilica/church. I was stunned by how beautifully the interior had been decorated - it seemed that every last square centimeter of the walls and domed ceilings were adorned with intricate religious scenes, statues and tapestries. The detail was out of this world. And in the centre, hanging in front of the principal altar the harrowing image of an emaciated Jesus Christ on the cross gazing sorrowfully down at us mere mortals.

I sat there for quite some time taking in the majestic wonders of this hallowed place and listening to the faint, classic religious music playing in the background.

It's centrally located just off the Piazza Vecchia, surrounded by many other lovely ancient, well preserved buildings. You must go!

The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is a church located in Bergamo Alta, in Piazza del Duomo, right next to the Cathedral. The church was built as a vote of gratitude by the inhabitants of Bergamo for defending the city against drought, hunger and plague that hit the city and the surrounding area in 1133. The temple was built in the second half of the 12th century in the Romanesque style on a Greek cross plan with three naves. The interior makes a gigantic impression. The interior of the basilica was rebuilt in the 17th century, the dome's interior was also changed during this period. The original Romanesque layout on the Greek cross plan has been preserved, but the decor is baroque. It is worth paying attention to the crucifix from the fourteenth century. The basilica lacks a central entrance. All four existing entrances are side entrances. The Portal of the Red Lions with a portico by Giovanni da Campione opens on Piazza del Duomo. From the south, the Portal of the White Lions overlooks Piazza Rosate, and to the left of it the Portal of the Fountain by Pietro Isabello. Beautiful place. You have to see them.

Basilica di Maria Maggiore is just wow!

The tapestries were amazing, one I noticed was a copy of the original painting. (The tapestry was folded up on the bottom left hand side revealing the original artwork ).There is some interesting renovation work going on at the front of the church. As for the frescoes and the art , well there are just so many things to see allow yourself some time and be wowed too !! Really worth the small entry fee .Time your visit between the multiple groups that are visiting , so you don't have to queue for too long. Plenty of cafes nearby if it seems really busy or go next door to the Capella coloni.

I had no idea what to expect, but strolling around the upper part of Bergamo I came upon this treasure. The exterior is remarkable in itself, clearly being Romanesque but with flourishes that nod towards the glory of Moorish detailing. Once inside there is even more to see, with every inch covered in relief, fresco, tapestry. It is a feast for the eyes. The location also adds to the building, as it is surrounded by many fine buildings and structures that hark back many centuries.
I was only in the city for a brief visit, so I will return to ensure I visit for a longer time.

The construction of this church began in 1137. in Roman style . It has no a main gate but it has two entrances with 2-2 marble lions. The entrance fee is 3 euros but it’s worth. The walls are decorated with frescos from 14th century eg. Last Supper, Madonna or Moses. They are very nice like huge precisious tapestries with episodes of Blessed Virgin Mary’s life. We also visited the tomb of the famous composer Donizetti. I think it’s a must-see sigth in Bergamo.

After having queued for hours to get into St.Mark's in Venice we were amazed when we discovered this. No queue and no entrance fee and so full of fantastic treasures. We spent quite a while in there trying to take in all the beauty. A visit is highly recommended.

The awesome 12th century Basilica Di Santa Maria Maggiore has a plain sandstone exterior and the shock comes when we went inside. We were staggered by the decadence, the detail and the devotion to the decorative arts. Colourful frescoes, intricate tapestries, finely manicured busts and statues and artistic flourishes adorned every surface, from floor to ceiling.

The church is a very unique design but assembled inside is a surprisingly splendid collection of artwork, huge tapestries, and amazing woodwork. Admission is €3 but it is well worth it. The choir area is being restored and you can watch the workers as they restore the wood carvings and inlaid panels.
