Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Torre del Gombito is located at the intersection of Via Mario Lupo and Via Gombito. It was built in the 12th century and today it is 52 meters high compared to the original 64.It towers over the city and looks great. The tower has retained its original appearance, typical of medieval fortifications. It attracts the eye and crowds of tourists. You can visit the interior and watch the city from there.

If you happened to be in Milan, please leave at least one day for Bergamo. This city is UNESCO World Heritage for reason. It would take you about 45 min from Milano Centrale Railway Station and another few min by funicular to Citta’Alta-upper city, (but definitely go on foot on your way back to soak and absorb the beauty). I guarantee you will be sold forever. Please climb to Gombito Tower- you will be awarded by the most spectacular view over Bergamo. Bad news- steps are very narrow, so no flip flops. The good news- if I could do it, everyone can. Now, it will be your ‘Oh’ and ‘Ah’ moment.

Inside the Gombito Tower is the Tourist Information office, at the desk ask about the free guided tour up the 12th century tower to the panoramic terrace. There are several time slots a day but make sure that you make a reservation on the day as there are only 6 places per climb. We ascended the tower at a great pace, all 52 metres, and were fortunate to be able to stay on the top for roughly 15 minutes. On the day of our visit our guide, a lovely older gentleman, gave us a huge amount of history on the tower, Bergamo and the region, it was fantastic. Our guide kindly offered to take our photograph, a very welcome gesture. As it was a fine day, we were able to see Milan in the distance.

We love climbing towers, there is always something special about viewing a destination from above. If you only climb one tower in Bergamo, I highly recommend this free service.

The actual tower is not so much to look at - maybe because they have the amazing cathedral and basilica - but the view from the top is well worth entering for

Situated in the tourist office is this strange tower, very common in northern Italy, which were the status symbols of their age. This one built in the 12th C is largely an empty shell containing wooden stairs with great views and completely free. You will need to book and parties restricted to about 10 and led by a largely non speaking guide but well worth the effort (about 180 steps)

Only 10 people are allowed to get in at a time, and as far as I know, tours take place only at 10 am in the morning - so you must book early to be able to climb it up.
While climbing up, you will be given time to rest and while doing so, the guide will explain the history of the tower.
What I enjoyed most were the stunning views once on the top.

It is 52 meters high and the only privately owned tower still standing. In 1877 it was donated to the town by the then owners and now houses and information center on the ground floor.

You don't get much for free these days, but book ahead and you can get fantastic views over Bergamo for just that-zilch! The bottom of the tower is currently uses as the tourist bureau, speakers very fluent in English which helps non-Italian speakers like me.
The tower is situated in the middle of old Bergamo (we got there by funicular). We only booked a couple of hours before and got in easily, but well worth the climb to the top. I was disappointed that the guide who took us up explained everything in Italian as we went up, with no translations. I did ask if she could explain to us what she was saying but she didn't. Oh, well, it didn't detract from the fact tht it was free and the views were brilliant. Plenty of opportunities for great pics. It was nice and sunny when we went there. Historical significance that you can read on a plaque at the bottom of the tower.

But it's a long way up if you are not fit! Friendly guide. You need to book in advance in tourist office as numbers are limited to 10 per visit. Plenty of time at the top to look at 360* panorama and take photos.

It's free but make a booking in advance at the information desk downstairs as there are certain hours of visits. You'll have a guide telling the history of the tower on the way up and some nice views from the open terrace at the top of the tower. Personally I liked the views from the Campanone tower bit more but it's good to try them both if you have time.
