once upon a time, people had no smartphones, not even a swatch on their wrist, but they had a Meridian. this one is large and will tell you where the sun is, if you are lucky enough to have a sunny day.

It is a most complete meridian giving you the time of the month over the whole year. Unfortunately it works only when the sun shines.

The solar clock built in 1798 does not give the exact time today as over the years the earth's axis shifted - however, it is interesting to see how the sun penetrating a disk above the portico will show, roughly, the passage over the meridian and the zodiac sign too

This solar clock is under the Palazzo della Ragione in Bergamo Alta. You will need to be walking almost on it to see that this is a solar clock. It has a shape of a long number "8" with zodiac signs all around it. There is a disk with a hole hanged on the building about 20 feet above the... More

Takes a time to understand what those drawings on the floor are but given the age and the precision is quite something to see

if you want to enjoy this "meridiana" (solar clock) at its best you should to check in advance at what time you can see the ray of the sun goes through the lines. Time changes according to different season and it's written on the meridiana itself

Although this is all in Italian it is an interactive museum that engages you and holds your attention. We spent three hours before lunch and then went back for more! (ticket lasts all day) the staff were on hand to translate if you needed it but we grasped the overall meanings Buy a Bergamo Ticket from hotels or the ATB... More

Every time I go to Bergamo with my kids, a take a few moments to explain to them how this clock works. A fine example of how a meridian should be. Pity that some tuck are able to pass over it when they have to reach Piazza Vecchia. This should be really forbidden!
