About
Every day: from 10.00 to 13.00 - from 14.00 to 17.30. The construction begun in March 1167. The dimensions are considerable: 34 m (111,55 ft) high, and 20,5 m (67,26 ft) in diameter. The building in Romanesque style with an octagonal plant is crowned by an elegant gallery. The entrance portal is framed by a prothyrum with two lions, like the prothyrum of the nearby Cathedral. The light filters in the Baptistery through a double series of twin lancet windows and from the lantern in the summit of the dome. In the center is placed the great octagonal baptismal font: it's a monolithic block of red Verona marble. The cistern is crowned by a small wooden sculpture of Risen Christ. The Three altars inside are dedicated to the Sorrowful Vergin, the Crucifix and St. Biagio.

Great baptismal building. Nothing really explained in English, but still worth it. The marble floor and the four crosses are wonderful. The music they play is relaxing. I was happy ro pay.

We have visited countless European places of worship. The Baptistry at the Cremona Cathedral is special. It is inspiring and
when we were there, they were playing appropriate music as a backdrop to the visual splendor.

Even a non religious person can be awed by the efforts of artists and craftspeople. Enjoy the varicolored marble used in much of the interior. Don't snap photos and leave, but spend time considering the intense motivation of those who created this masterpiece.

The architect of this baptistry of St John anticipated the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence by two centuries. The construction was started in 1167 in the Romanesque style. Originally it had 4 doors but only the northern door remains open. This leads out onto the rather oddly named Piazza del Comune as, although the Comune building is present, it is the huge Duomo that dominates the area. Light in the baptistry comes in via a double series of twin lancet windows and the lantern in the dome. There are balconies which are accessed, but not by the public, via steps inside the walls. The two doorways are cleverly concealed. The huge octagonal basin is in the centre on a slab of marble and there is a 14th century crucifix, an altar to St Biagio and an altar with a 17th century wooden sculpture of the Madonna. There is a small entrance fee but it was well worth it, the guide was cheerfully informative.

This is a nice looking old building right next to the main Cathedral. The signs said that it was used for all baptisms in the church. It looks quite old and has a lot of detail.

I bought the combined ticket for the bell tower and the Baptistery, and headed up the tower first. The so called Torrazzo, is the third tallest brick tower in the world, and the oldest among those 3 towers. Completed in 1309 its height reached 112m and after having walked up more than 500 steps I reached the top where I had a wonderful view over the town below and the surrounding countryside and the Po river towards the south. It was also really nice that I was the only tourist and visitor up there enjoying the views. I then descended the stairs and went in the Baptistery. A friendly old man at the ticket booth asked me where I was from and started talking about the building's history and of the city too. Built around the time of the Cathedral it's another wonderful example of Romanesque architecture, and as most other Baptisteries it was built in an octagonal plan. The interior though not frescoed as other Baptisteries, still had a nice look to it.

We visited the battistero with a joint ticket to the Torrazzo. The place is small but quite impressive, with a very peculiar shape and history. It can be seen in just 10 minutes, as the guy at the entrance of the Torrazzo advised us. Interested ones can learn more about the building's history on various plaques inside.

The Cathedral was closed so we had some time before it open. Paid the small entrance fee and went in. For us to see a separate building for Baptism is unusual. The decor was interesting. Nice art

I've seen plenty of towers and churches, but this was special. Used only for babtism ceremonies, but still so massive. The acoustics were really great. Well worth the extra 3€ to enter.
