The area
Neighbourhood: Centro Storico
The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.

The ancient door belonged to the walls of Bastioni raised in the 16th century for defensive purposes, the original gate was destroyed by Napoleon, the one we can see today was built in 1810 with the triumphal arch ad the two symmetrical sandstone units.
From the arch you can se the modern palaces of business district Porta Volta

The Porta Nuova is one of the main business districts of Milan. I was just walking from garibaldi Station into the centre when I came across this area, which looked like a mix of office blocks, well to do residential buildings, cafes, restaurants and sadly homelessness. The area itself is nice and looks highly gentrified. The district of Porta Nuova takes its name from the Napoleonic era city gate which is still standing. The gate is in need of repair though and the homeless also use it as a place to sleep

Stayed only one night and it was certainly small for 2 couples but it was clean and Neat,Had everything we needed including a coffee machine and hot plate. It was an easy walk to the Duomo and La Scala Theatre and there is a great little Japanese restaurant next door.

The main business district of Milan filled with skyscrapers and other tall buildings. It is worth seeing if you are a fan of modern architecture. There are also plenty of places to eat here.

Porta Nuova is the main business district of Milan and it is also the name of an arched gateway built in the early 19th century. It's not the area many tourist will want to visit as its architecture is modern. albeit interesting. I ended up here by accident while wandering around Milan centre. Unless your a fan of modern architecture, I'd give it a miss.

Those who have visited some Expo (in my experience there are Shanghai 2010 and Milan 2015) are well aware of the exciting and festive atmosphere of these places: in them we forget, at least temporarily, the problems that plague us as singles, or humanity as a whole, and we are immersed in the sense of celebration that is given by these achievements. The crowd, the liveliness of it, the awareness that for months and years thousands of minds and bodies have cooperated to obtain this spatial result full of meanings, induces any visitor to an optimism (even temporary).
But when this "futuristic" atmosphere emanates not from a temporary exhibition, but from urban planning and permanent buildings, the result is much stronger. The feeling of to be projected towards the future isn't entrusted to the ephemeral initiative of an Expo, but it's permanent: you feel that, even when you are absent from a place, it nevertheless continues to experience this projection of its own.
I haven't visited many places in the world that respond to this futuristic ecstasy: the Défense in Paris, Canary Wharf in London, Marina Bay in Singapore, many sites in Manhattan, and little else.
Recently, "Porta Nuova" in Milan has been added to this collection of futuristic places.
There is an added value for me in Porta Nuova, compared to the other futuristic sites in the world: I have been an eyewitness to the status of this area in a decades-long perspective: already railway yard, then (from the 1960s) decommissioned, and basically abandoned until at the beginning of the third millennium. Overall a "waiting area" (as urban planning scholars call it), which means waiting for redevelopment.
And this redevelopment has finally arrived, and is fully operational. Today "Porta Nuova" fully generates the "Expo" effect that I tried to describe above. Please stroll around Piazza Aulenti (by César Pelli, the same architect as the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur), or in the underground space below the Piazza, or from the Piazza towards the "Bosco verticale" building, or towards the staircases leading to the nightlife area in Corso Como; or even from the Piazza towards east, up to climb over Via Melchiorre Gioia, along a cycling and pedestrian path of almost 1 km: all around you gives rise to this sensation.
A further added value of this realization is the recognition of some records: as the excellence in the landscaping project, which brought to the Porta Nuova project.the MIPIM Awards 2018 for the Best Urban Regeneration Project category.

Cool part of town. I loved looking at the "Bosco Verticale," which means vertical forest. It is a pair of two tall residential buildings with trees on each balcony. The trees produce oxygen, moderate temperatures, and reduce noise. It's just outside the piazza Gae Aulenti, a futuristic looking collection of buildings. There's also a famous shopping street, Corso Como, with trendy items. There was so much to look at, I wish I had more time there.

There is something slightly surreal about the new high-rise financial district being built adjacent to the Porta Nuova - a bit like the film Blade Runner where skyscrapers are lit up with huge neon advertising but a different life exists at street level. There is a large piazza with quite a few shops - and a supermarket below ground - places to eat - a bookshop - and when we were there in November, an ice rink. It has the feel of an area where young professionals live but even in the pedestrianised area you are likely to get buzzed by people on roller-blades. There is a cultural venue here showing films etc. Well worth spending a couple of hours here. When you are ready to leave do so by the inclined ramp that takes you towards the old gate and you will find yourself in a delightful traditional street of bars and restaurants literally in the shadow of the skyscrapers. A new perspective on an intriguing city.

Porta Nuova offers a distinct feel so very different from the Centro Storico. The buildings, banks, restaurants are many and affords one the opportunity to relax and enjoy another part of Milan. We shopped a bit and found a place for a tasty dinner. Fun to deviate while en route to Como.
