About
Locals and travelers flock to this quaint neighborhood for its inviting atmosphere, delicious food, and great drinks. The Navigli area is centered on the two remaining canals that once encircled Milan. During the day, you can stroll along the waterfront to spot beautiful street art and visit historic landmarks like Vicolo dei Lavandai. Grab a spot by the Darsena pond at sunset to people-watch and relax before heading to a cozy bistro for dinner. Complete your visit with some gelato and drinks at the local pubs for a night out. The traditional Fiera di Sinigaglia flea market takes place here once a week too. – Tripadvisor

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Navigli
The Navigli is part of historic Milan. In the ancient days, the entire city was linked with canals, similar to Venice. Today, most of the canals are gone, but the Navigli remains a canal-based neighborhood. There are two major canals: Naviglio Pavese and Naviglio Grande. The Naviglio Grande's bridges greet visitors at dusk with an amazing view. The Navigli district specializes in clubs, cafes, and vintage shops. Lifestyle reigns supreme here. You can start the walk from the Colonne di San Lorenzo, an antique colonnade in front of the Basilica di San Lorenzo. During the daytime, this place acts as a meeting point for artists and students reading books or chatting with friends; the nights turn it into a stepping-stone for club hoppers. Science lovers will also relish the opportunity to visit the Science and Technology National Museum Leonardo Da Vinci, showcasing inventions of the Italian genius.

    Lovely canals in Milan
I spent a half of a day along the lovely canals of Milan. It was not crowded with tourists and I was amazed by the restaurants and street vendors. I decided to have lunch at one of the restaurants and I was pretty much there alone until my desert came out. The area was so calm and peaceful and walking along the canals was great.

Such A Different Part Of Milan
We hopped off the hop on hop off tour bus here & had a lovely walk around the canal area of Milan. We were there in the daytime/October so fairly quiet. Lots of bars/cafes/restaurants everywhere & plenty of artisan stalls selling items. Loved the area.

The heart of the city has moved to this area, full of bars, cafes, restaurants! The canals are not so big. but is is nice to walk along and watch the people gathering and listen to music and meaybe, if you are like see a local music band. We were lucky to stay in a walking distance apartment and visited three times in a row!!! Apperitivo is served everywhere! There asre also nice restaurants, but you need to make a reservation.

    Nightlife
The canal is a great place to go after wandering around the city. We went there for 2 nights. You can go on a boat up and down but we didn’t bother. Was nice to drink aperitifs and just chill. We were there very late and it felt safe. Metro nearby and some lovely restaurants for all budgets.

    Lovely peaceful area
Only a 20 minute walk from the centre, the area was lovely. Canals lined with shops, restaurants, bars and cafes and some street sellers selling souvenirs. It was nice to sit outside with a drink and people watch, then grab lunch and people watch some more - all whilst in the March sunshine.

Lovely night life and lots of great restaurants - stay for the beautiful reflections in the canal
Very easy to get to via Milan metro system. We got off the Porta Genova FS station, pretty much just walked straight down to reach the canal. There were two bridges spanning the canal for some great photographs. We strolled both sides of the canal before settling at a nice restaurant for dinner. Did a loop "bridge to bridge". There are a ton of selections. Cafes and bars too. Many souvenir stalls to browse through. We did not see all the graffiti people posted about. It is a lovely neighborhood, definitely worth the time to us. Stayed at nightfall for some fantastic reflections in the water. Instagram photo opportunities.

    Chill apéritivo location 🍹🥂🍻
The interconnected 5 canals date back from middle ages. We found a cool vacation ambiente here, plenty of al fresco drinking&dining. Most of the places along the Navigli look the same, but watch out! Some tourist traps are waiting for you! Check prices before sitting down! Great for a pit stop and people watching. Once a month, the last Sunday of each month, you can enjoy a huge flea market along the canal (Mercato dell'Antiquariato sul Naviglio Grande) .

    lovely , different
Navigli is a charming area in the heart of Milan, known for its network of canals. However, don’t set your expectations on a Venetian experience—you’d be disappointed. Instead, think of it as a vibrant neighborhood about a 15-minute walk from the Duomo, blissfully free from the throngs of tourists that flood the city center. Navigli has its own unique appeal, with lively bars and restaurants that truly come alive later in the evening. It’s a bit like discovering a suburb of Milan that hasn’t succumbed to the usual tourist hype, offering a more authentic slice of local life. The atmosphere is relaxed, the vibe is energetic, and it’s a refreshing change of pace from the busy streets around the Duomo. My only word of caution is to prepare for mosquitoes, especially in the height of summer. With the canals’ stagnant water, it’s practically a mosquito haven. But don’t let that deter you—if you’re in the center of Milan, a walk to Navigli after dark is well worth it. It’s a safe and intriguing way to experience a different side of this fabulous city. And if you’re looking for a place to stay, there are some excellent hotel choices in the area. I highly recommend checking out my review of Aethos Hotel, which perfectly captures the vibrant yet cozy essence of Navigli.

Very nice area to be at the end of a day. Many bars and restaurants alongside the canals. Many go there for “Aperativos”. You pay €10 for a drink and get a (quite big) plate with food with it. Having a drink and go for a good bite in a restaurant is also possible. Pricing is Milan level, not cheap.

Visited this neighbourhood one evening and ate in a lovely restaurant near the canal. There are many ti choose from in this area. The following morning we returned & spent time rambling around, admiring the waterways and traversing the various bridges. There was a lot of activity that day as there was an artists exhibition/market taking place outdoors along the canal which made our visit even more enjoyable.

This is a VERY overated area of Milan. The guidebooks and sites describe a bustling place filled with little independent shops and artist studios. In fact, it is a grotty walkway alongside, admittedly very clean, canals, with cafes/restaurants outnumbering other businesses by about ten to one.
It claims to be pedestrianised, but watch out for delivery vans and cyclists travelling at speed and giving way to no one

Its lack of cars along the river make for a peaceful meal experience. Would go in the evening due the lights. 4/5.

Italians has a lack of understanding for cold drinks, especially iced coffee. They also cant drive, park or use a restroom without ruining it for the next person. Milan is a noisy and busy city full of people wanting something from you. Would go to the countryside next time.

Do not take the canal cruise. It is an utter waste of time and money. We felt ripped off. There is nothing to see apart from grotty buildings and graffiti. The boat goes up the canal for 20 minutes and turns around and comes back. The audio guide is via an internet link so if you haven’t taken your phone and earpieces you will be in complete silence.

Visited here last October in 2022. We had a brilliant time, weather was lovely, plenty of bars and restaurants to choose. Top tip…Get takeaway drinks and enjoy them on the canal !! Some bars do deals where they’re half the price so we had drinks which were €5 instead of €10.

This entire area has been defaced with graffiti. The same malignant youth culture to be found anywhere in the western world has robbed what, I’m sure was once a lovely area, of its charm and dignity. We are from New York City and it was too grimy, grungy, gross even for us. We wound up on the outskirts of the area because of a restaurant at which we had reservations. The restaurant was wonderful but even they bemoaned the horrible street conditions. The taxi driver who brought us there said the same thing. The ubiquitous graffiti is a blight that has destroyed a once great neighborhood. Mind you, this is not artistic graffiti like one sees in Valparaiso. It’s just kids with a can of spray paint being stupid and ruining the canals in the process.

It's a lovely spot to unwind at the end of the day, with numerous bars and restaurants lining the canals. Many locals and visitors alike gather here for "Aperitivos," where you pay €10 for a drink and receive a generous plate of food with it. Alternatively, you can enjoy a drink and then dine at one of the nearby restaurants. Prices are on par with Milan's standards, so it's not the cheapest option, but definitely worth it for the experience.

The name of the district is translated from Italian as "canals", as the appearance resembled Venice. The Grand Canal appeared first in 1178, and had a length of more than 50 kilometers. It was he who was used to deliver the snow-white marble from which the Duomo Cathedral in Milan was built.
