The area

Neighbourhood: Centro Storico
The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.

- Herbert C1,791 contributionsHeartbeat of MilanPiazza Duomo is undoubtedly the heartbeat of the city where your Milan adventure begins. Given its central location right in the city centre, it is easily accessible by all manners of transportations. Most of Milan’s key attractions are located around the square, including the Duomo Cathedral, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping arcade and La Scala Theater. Excellent place to just walk around or people-watch while sipping your hot latte macchiato.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 January 2024
- dundee hNew York City, New York15 contributionsMad about MilanI spent the week between Christmas and New Years Eve in Milan. I absolutely loved it. It is a great city for walking, difficult to go more than a few blocks without seeing some magnificent architecture. The Duomo does not disappoint in any way. I actually walked the 256 steps up to the top and the views are spectacular. Next time, though, I will take the elevator. LOL.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 13 January 2024
- RazorfishLittle Rock, Arkansas5,287 contributionsExpansive piazza in front of the Duomo and GalleriaMy wife and I were in Milan for the purpose of viewing the Last Supper by da Vinci this summer. As soon as we viewed it, we walked over to the Piazza del Duomo. It is an expansive square in front of the Duomo and the Galleria. Being in the Piazza with all of the tourists is one of the things I enjoy most about Milan.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 January 2024
- VadimMurmansk, Russia34,642 contributionsThe heart of MilanThe heart of Milan - the Piazza Duomo owes its current appearance to the architect Giuseppe Mengoni, whose project expanded the square to its current size in 1865-1873. Since that time, there have been only one fundamental changes - the monument to King Victor Emmanuel, installed at the end of the XIX century. By the way, it was Victor Emmanuel II who laid the first stone in 1865 for the construction of the gallery named after himself, which became the second landmark of the square. The gallery, which became an equally important place for Milan, was built by 1867. Unfortunately, during its construction, Mengoni died after falling from the scaffolding. Despite the importance of the gallery, the dominant feature of the square is the cathedral, which is the third largest in the world after Rome's San Pietro and Seville. The cathedral was built on the site of the early Christian Basilica of St.Thecla, where in 367 Bishop Ambrose of Milan baptized the father of the church, Augustine. Both they and the Virgin Mary and many other saints are depicted in thousands of sculptures of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Nascente. This time I managed to visit the roof of the cathedral, which offers a magnificent panorama of the Piazza Duomo. If climbing roofs is not part of your plans, then you can sit in a cafe in the leader of the Italian retail La Rinascente on the left side of the cathedral.Visited June 2023Travelled soloWritten 7 April 2024
- Brown_SamanthaKennewick, Washington1,783 contributionsThe heart of Old Town Milano and the cathedral - great place to meet and people watchThis is the heart of Old Town Milano, where people meet up, shop, visit the amazing cathedral. Great place for people watching. We met up with our friends here each morning before exploring Milan on our own >> often by the monument to King Victor Emmanuel. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a great place to hunt for gelato, restaurants, high end shops, and cafes. We were cautious about our belonging, but really did not find any threats. Plenty of warning on pick pockets, scams, etc Arrive early if you want to capture the blue sunny sky with the cathedral silhouetted in the foreground. Otherwise come in the afternoon for great lighting, as the cathedral faces west for nice photos. A lot of action for people watching.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 6 July 2024

The square is very large with a statue of a figure on horseback in its centre. It's an attractive square with a spectacular view of the front of the Duomo. It was very crowded when I arrived and there are numerous sellers of trinkets, which I ignored, avoided eye contact and was not hassled at all.

Awe inspiring piazza, surrounded by fine shops and delicious restaurants. Enjoyed lunch outdoors along the perimeter of the piazza. Highly recommend this as a point to visit to experience incredible art, architecture, cuisine, and culture.

This Square is the heart of the city of Milan. The Milan Cathedral (Duomo) and a monument dedicated to Victor Emmanuel II are set in the centre of the large rectangle.
There are many restaurants in the area and the nearby Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II gallery links Piazza della Scala with the Piazza del Duomo. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele is covered with a vaulting made of iron and glass.
With its elegant atmosphere and the many stores lining the interior the gallery is a popular place and one of the city's most prestigious landmark.

At the head of this wonderful square is the Duomo it is named after. Made is multicoloured marble and shining white even in the moonlight. Around the square there is the giant Galleria where all the high brand names can be found. There is also the Duomo Museum entrance.

This main city square (albeit, rectangular in shape) is located in the center of Milan. Many tourists come hear to hang out in and around the "Cathedral Square, and to view the Milan Cathedral. Lots of fine eateries and cafes in the area.

During my brief stay in Milan, I would usually start exploring for the day from here. Easy to reach by underground, the stop is called Duomo. The cathedral is of course the highlight here and it's very nice to just take in the view. The Galeria Vittorio Emmanuele is also here and both are the most well known sights in Milan. There's a lot going on here and quite a few restaurants around, probably more expensive than say Brera or Navigli. I would recommend going to dinner in those two areas. All in all, great place to visit. Unfortunately, some street vendors or people who try to take your picture for money can sometimes be annoying.

Fab views of the cathedral. To visit the cathedral is €5 per adult and you can purchase tickets immediately via phone or the ticket office.
Top tip: unfortunately you can’t sneak into Mac Donald’s for a free wee like normal as they had security guards checking. But you can buy a coffee for under €2 which is cheaper than 2 people paying to use a public toilet!

This is the main tourist area of the city and there are always lots of people about (most of them are taking photos of the Duomo). A lot of tourist attractions as well as shops and restaurants surround the plaza so it’s a obvious place to start your trip to Milan in.
At night the Duomo looks at its best and there are usually some kind of street performers providing a bit of entertainment.

The view of the cathedral and the Galleria Emmanuelle is wonderful. However, there was a big concert taking place in the square. This limited the view and there were even more people in the square than usual.
It is very beautiful early in the morning because there are not many people. At lunchtime it is very crowded and it is difficult to walk.
You should avoid coffee, aperitifs and food here: everything costs significantly more than 500 m outside the square.
The concert could be heard from further away and so we were able to hear Gianna Nannini live!

This is a lively, busy square with lots of street entertainers such as a man with a beautiful voice singing traditional Italian opera songs. There are some cheap restaurants just off the square with rhe view of the cathedral. There is also a fountain and shopping centres and museums just off it. Definitely a must if you are coming to Milan.

What time do they turn off the lights at the Duomo? I know it's beautifully lit up at night... 🤔 but anybody know what time they turned it off? Would I be able to see them at midnight? Anythings to do at Midnight in Milan?

Almocei em vários restaurantes nesta praça e queria fazer avaliações a eles, mas um não me recordo do nome, fica ao lado do restaurante papa Francisco é é qualquer coisa coma pasta pizza ou algo assim semelhante. Quem souber o nome que me pudesse dizer.

This is truly an awesome area and there is a humongous historic building but I am not sure about safety. There are tons of tourists but I don’t see any police or security in this area.

It is safe area , but there are pick pockets around.
Please be careful, and keep credit cards separate from money.

I'm taking the train to Milan for a day visit. What's the best way to get to City Centre?
Written 17 January 2016
I suggest you grab a map from the station centrale and go there by walking.
Better ask the tourism office to highlight the best road to take,
By this way,you can have an idea about the city, and not only the touristic center.
On your way back you can take the metro.
Another way to discover the city with the ability to hop in hop off is to take the bus sight seeing tour that happens to stop in front of the stazione centrale

Hi everybody!
I need an advice : what is the best way of getting from Linate airport to The
Square Milano Duomo Hotel
I understand that I can take bus#73 to the San Babilo metro , but the bus has a lot of stops and might take up to 1 1/2 hr.
The other choice is to take AirBus, but it will take me to a Central Train station which is 3 km from the Hotel
Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
PS Do not want to spent $$$ for a Taxi or private transfer
Written 30 May 2015
Dear alinderman55,
Perhaps the best way to get to Piazza del Duomo (although I do not know the name of the hotel) you get to the central station with the airport transfer and then take the yellow metro M3 S Donato direction and get off after 4 stops to Duomo. The cost of the metro ticket is 1.50 Euros, half every 3 minutes while the transfer from Linate costs 10 EUR one way, 16 EUR round trip a bus every 20 minutes. See the website atm and malpensashuttle for any further information.
Although late, I hope it is useful and you has understood my English and I wish you a pleasant stay in Italy.
