As you walk along the Naviglio Grande, take a few moments to go off the beaten path next to the restaurant El Brellin, and discover the washerwomen's area...the slabs that clothes were washed on are still visible...a reminder of the days without modern machinery...this was also a "conversation" point...the women washing and gossiping about their daily lives...something to show modern... This corner is interesting if you know the story. Not worth acrossing the city to visit, though the area of Navigli is one of the best for a night out so you'll probably pass here.

to really realize and immagine this alley I suggest a double cross, the first one in the night whereby Navigli are fully of people. The second one in the early morning. I leave you to think/feel how impressive it is. Ciao!!

quite a unique site, which i never miss when showing visitors Milano, since it is a relic, but given its position one can imagine what the scene must have looked like 100 or 200 years ago

This is not much, but is worth seeing. We used it as an excuse to go to the Navigli district. It is a small roof over a small waterway where laundry used to be washed. The architecture is reminiscent of roman times, and the bar next door is very friendly.

Nice Place! Aperol Sprizz at the El Brellin at the Lavandai Restaurant, breathing in the shadowy past's whispers. Nice to visit.

Okay, women used to wash their clothes here. (clap clap) There is a past. (clap clap) But besides snapping a photo at the washing stone, there is little that you can do. It is just a shelter. You should not spend more than 5 minutes there.

A backwater in the Navigli district, absloutely hidden, but becoming popular among the tourists, gives you the taste of yesterday's Milan thanks to its well-preserved ditch used by laundresses up to the end of the 19th c.

Staying in Navigli

Neighbourhood Profile
The Navigli is part of historic Milan. In the ancient days, the entire city was linked with canals, similar to Venice. Today, most of the canals are gone, but the Navigli remains a canal-based neighborhood. There are two major canals: Naviglio Pavese and Naviglio Grande. The Naviglio Grande's bridges greet visitors at dusk with an amazing view. The Navigli district specializes in clubs, cafes, and vintage shops. Lifestyle reigns supreme here. You can start the walk from the Colonne di San Lorenzo, an antique colonnade in front of the Basilica di San Lorenzo. During the daytime, this place acts as a meeting point for artists and students reading books or chatting with friends; the nights turn it into a stepping-stone for club hoppers. Science lovers will also relish the opportunity to visit the Science and Technology National Museum Leonardo Da Vinci, showcasing inventions of the Italian genius.
