Lovely place to visit anyway, plus the current Canaletto exhibition. A gem of Milan, but cheap tickets available without booking (this was UK half-term and the city generally busy). The cafe is as good/better than most I saw in Milan, yet so reasonably priced. Really appreciated that our autistic son entered free with one of us free as carer. He... More

We went there to see a special exhibition "Bellotto e Canaletto". Impressive. Equally impressive however is the series of interconnected buildings of Gallerie d Italia (the ex head Office of a Bank plus two palaces). The Bank's main hall with the teller windows, the painted walls and ceilings of the palaces would be enough to make for an interesting visit.... More

I was there for a show on young artist from east Europe. Apart from the original show, the place in itself offers a direct encounter with the masters of the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection of the bank is amazing and you can talk directly with a Burri, a Capogrossi, a Fontana or a Manzoni. In short all the... More

There are so many reasons to add this wonderful gallery near the top of your itinerary when visiting Milan. The building itself is something to behold. Try spotting if the room you're in is genuinely stuccoed or trompe l'oeil. The range of art is impressive. The core of the collection are the 19th century collections of some of Italy's biggest... I visited the place for an art exhibition in January 2017. The tickets are not cheap at 10,00€ but the exhibit was very professional, lot of security staff and top class organization. I also noted that the toilets were the cleanest in all Milan, and I stayed there 3 whole days... Cafeteria and bookshop are also worth a visit.

Hosted in the former 19th century headquarter of a bank, of which it retains the splendid architecture and some finishings, this private (free admission) museum hosts a huge collection of paintings and other works from the early 19th century to these days. Though I found the 19th century part a bit repetitive and boring, the contemporary section is more diverse... More

We are forever indebted to the Concierge at our hotel (the Excelsior Hotel Gallia) for recommending this museum to us. For those of you who know the Neue Galerie in New York, it is similar - although the Milan museum is housed in a bank, but the beauty of the buildings and the collections are both unique. Gallerie d'Italia follows... More

It was an amazing experience with a wide variety of art works by Italian artists in a very impressive building. There is a lot to see so I would allow half a day to do it justice.

Staying in Centro Storico

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro Storico
The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.
