The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.

The most intriguing part of the Basilica in my view is the crypt where there are the dressed remains of Saints Ambrose, Gervasus and Protasus which are visible to the public. A few reasons to visit here so well worth spending an hour here if you have the time.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 September 2023

What an amazing place! Consecrated in the 4th century, the current church goes back 1,000 years; both the interior and the exterior of the church are magnificent. The mosaics are astonishing and worth a trip just themselves. I could do without the entombed skeletons of martyrs visible in the crypt but everything else about this church is a real marvel and there's really good English signage. Next time I'm in Milan this will be at the top of my list.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 1 October 2023

The Ambrosius basilica is supposedly the burial ground of the first christian bishop of Mediolanum in the Roman era. It was on the edge of the Roman city so it is likely to have been founded on Roman burial grounds. The church is a great example of early mediaval structures. With tombstone used as bricks for the wall and great mediaval art in site it is a beauty to visit

This impressive basilica houses ancient artefacts and dates back to the late years of the Roman Empire. There is a splendid mosaic in the apse, and many ancient pieces such as the altar, certain tombs etc. Unfortunately the Treasury was closed at the time we visited and the visit would have been better had we been able to view this

The Basilica is one of the most ancient churches in Milan. The Romanesque architecture is characterised by the apex facade with two loggias and an entrance portico with arches supported by semi-columns and pilasters. Inside one will find many chapels, decorative mosaics and frescoes together with a beautiful altar and relics of saints. Worth a visit.

This is a very beautiful basilica to visit, and entry is free of charge. The tomb of Saint Ambrose is right below the altar and we got to see the glass coffin with the remains. The Sacred Heart Chapel in here is one of the most beautiful chapels we’ve seen in Italy yet. The church’s website mentions construction beginning in 379… it looks very good for being so old. Visiting hours are from 10AM-12PM and 2:30-6:00PM M-F. Go have a look when in Milan.

The Basilica is probaby not so famous for the tourists as the Duomo and this is a tremendous mistake. Sant'Ambrogio is the masterpiece of the romanic architechture and it's amazing. The outside and the inside are simply perfect to understand the "rules" of this style.
It is rather small.
It's not possible to leave Milan without visiting it.

Our sightseeing tour stopped close to the Basilica so went to visit. Unfortunately we couldn’t visit it all due to an event happening. It is one of the most ancient churches in Milan. It has a Romanesque appearance, which the building started in 379 and completed in the 10th century. It was nice that some of the information was in English.

Very interesting Romanesque church, started in 379 and completed in the 10th century. It is dedicated to the patron saint of Milan, St. Ambrosio. Unfortunately, there was a wedding during my visit and I couldn't take a good look at it

Hi. How can i see the crypt? Was there 2 days ago but no one to ask. Now i feel like i have to visit milan in few years time to see the things i missed on this year's trip.

There are stairs down to the crypt in the main sanctuary just behind the altar and you can also walk around the back of the altar to view the remains of St Ambrose.

Is there an admission charge for the basilica and/or museum?
Written 13 May 2017
Hi. We didnt pay anything for the entrance to the building but we didnt spend very long there as they closed for 'lunch' so what i would say is check the opening times. Its worth visiting though and hopefully you wont be asked to leave while they shut off all the lights and closed the doors behind us. Hope this helps you a little.
