The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.

    Beautiful place to visit
The most amazing place. Walked in said wow and burst into tears!! Stunningly beautiful. The lovely guide laughed and said so many people had that reaction. We’re not religious people but the beauty of the place is very spiritual. Another must of places to see in Milan. And it’s free!!

    Milan’s Sistine Chapel
The exterior of this church is rather plain, and you would not know the true beauty of its interior unless you have done some research. However, the interior is spectacular. Dozens of beautiful paintings of Biblical events such as Noah’s Ark, etc. It is absolutely incredible inside, and I would definitely recommend you visit, as it is free to enter and not very busy when we went

Glorious little jewel right next to the Archeological Museum
On the advice of another reviewer we visited this gem of a church on a quiet Sunday morning as we were staying nearby. What a find - entrance is free but donations are welcomed. On the morning of our visit guided tours were available (again free) led by members of a local club. We had a charming elderly man who pointed out various images from the frescoes we might not have noticed - the ‘signature’ dog of one of the painters, St Agathe with her breasts in a plate (weird!), the significance of the animals in the Noah’s Ark fresco and the niche where the nuns of this very closed order received communion without being seen. It was really a delightful moment.

    WOW
There are no words to express the beauty of the frescoes of this church, called the Sistine Chapel of Milan, as soon as you enter you are surrounded by a myriad of colors and amazing paintings. The church is a part of the oldest and largest female convent of the city built between the 8th and 9th century. The churc is divided into two distinct areas , the first hall, entered from the street , was where the faithful gathered; the second, connected to the rest of the convent, was reserved for the nuns and is occupied by a large 16th century wooden choir. The walls are decorated with one of the most important fresco cycles fro 16th century Lombardy, mainly by Bernardino Luini and his followers.

We visited The Last supper early and were walking towards the Duomo. I had read about this church and it was hot, so I stopped in with my family of seven (young children, teens, twenty-somethings and above).
Everyone in our party loved this stop and spent far more time than we intended looking at the beautiful art .

It was wonderful, and it is free (although you will want to donate). Best of all, it was a slight respite from the incredibly hot day. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain taking some time to enjoy this stop.

While I have been to Milano various time I had not stopped in to admire the amazing frescos in the Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore. The building no longer functions as a church but is a museum attended to by volunteers of Touring Club Italiano. It only take 45 minutes to walk through the church, the monaatry and the adjoining cortile. It is vey close to either Castello Sforzesco or Santa Maria delle Grazie (The Last Supper). Its a very enjoyable collection of 16th century frescos - virtually wall to wall. I highly recommend it. It is also free but you can offer a donation to support it maintenance.

How shall I put this? One of the great Romanesque churches in the world.

Just as Sainte Chapelle in Paris is the epitome of the gothic style, the Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monstero Maggiore is, in my opinion, the epitome of the romanesque style. The gothic style architecture was developed to let more light into the church (or cathedral) and provide for picturesque stained glass windows, perhaps because the Romanesque style before it was kind of dark.

This is one gorgeous small church. The interior is a feast to the eyes. The exterior is so humble and gray, and one would never guess that the interior is so rich in color. We kept wishing that there was another door to lead us to more of this church. It was hard to leave. Entry is free of charge. Don’t miss the opportunity to be pleasantly surprised by this place. A true hidden gem…

Probably the most beautiful church in Milan, in my opinion. Hidden behind a deceivingly simple exterior facade, its interior is very intricate, filled with art from floor to ceiling, and it has a lot to offer on the inside.

It's not very big, but it's definitely worth the visit. It's also connected to the Archaeological Museum, -it's free to enter, and the staff is friendly enough. Nothing not to like.

The inside of Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore in Milan’s central district is FAR better than the Duomo and that’s reason enough to visit this hidden gem. There are literally hundreds of cathedrals in Milan, and while none rival the Duomo’s exterior, a walk through Chiesa di San Maurizio will convince you this is a much grander and thought provoking interior. The Hall of the Nuns (this church used to be attached to an important female convent of Benedictines), is quite spectacular. It doesn’t take long to visit the church and is WELL worth your time.

"Those who enter, perhaps by accident, are always amazed. Because it is impossible to imagine the spectacle behind that anonymous facade of Corso Magenta. ..." this quotes the site of the Touring club, whose volunteers take care of the entrances to this site. Too bad that on the relative page it is not written anywhere that from August 12 to August 18 the church is closed, which we discovered, against our will, on arrival in Corso Magenta. Like us, several tourists arrived and were astonished at this discovery. What about, we went to Milan on purpose to see San Maurizio and we will be back, since we do not live far away, unfortunately not everyone can. Truly an unintelligent choice by Touring to keep such a place closed in the week of mid-August, without even warning on the official site. For this reason alone we give 1 star.

It's great when you discover a place on your trip that wasn't in your plans and it surprises you. It was like that in this church. Very beautiful full of frescoes, without affectation, at least yet, from crazy tourists, a peaceful visit very well guided and best of all, free. Offered to visitors with care and dedication, this visit is undoubtedly worth it.

In my life, given the proximity, I have been to Milan dozens of times without knowing about the Church of San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore. I can't believe it!!!!
The entrance and the facade of the church are sober, pass almost unobsessed.
The interior is really remarkable starting from the main altar, separated from the nuns' room; in this second area you can appreciate in particular the organ, the partition with frescoes, the chapels among which the fresco of Noah's ark stands out. I will return whenever I am in Milan!
I also point out the people of the Touring Club who, discreetly, illustrate the beauty of the frescoes to visitors.
