The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Built in 1825, the monument was not dedicated to Garibaldi until 1860. It is made of stone and has a large central arch with a much smaller doorway on either side. The nearest metro station is, unsurprisingly, Garibaldi Metro Station and it is a short walk from there to the monument. After viewing it, I suggest you walk along the streets to the castle, Castello Sforzesco, as there are numerous churches and sites to see en route.

Nice area to visit during the day, morning, afternoon, and evening. Lots of bars, cafes, and restaurants conveniently located including shops and a couple of pharmacies. I passed by here a few times, once on my way to the Duomo and a couple times early in the morning for a nice jog. Love that I could connect to free WiFi while I was in the area.

Beautiful long walks can get you to bump to great human creations like that. Oh I love this feeling of discovery, like a true traveler and not a tourist!

The Porta Garibaldi, is a Neoclassical city gate located in Milan, built to commemorate the visit of Francis I of Austria-Hungary, which controlled Milan at the time. The gate has the look of a classical Doric order design and has a large central arch, flanked by a portal on either side. The gate is decorated with floral motifs and topped with two female allegorical figures. By the standards of a city gate, this one looks slightly out of place for it’s smaller than normal size.

The gate was built to commemorate the visit of Francis of Austria in 1825 and dedicated to garibaldi in 1860. The area known as Porto Nuova declined over the years but has begun a restoration which include the Garibaldi Gate. Sadly the Gate is now in a pleasant square but with no description of what it is or the history.

This beautiful arched monument named after one of the fathers of Italy, Giuseppe Garabaldi, who helped Italy gain independence from Austria. This was one of the original gates to the city, and built in honor of an Austrian king. The arch has two portals on either side both topped by beautiful sculptures. Hard to imagine that back in the early 1800's there was a road leading up to this gate, with no buildings or anything around and this gate protecting the city behind it.

Massive and dominant monument at the Corso Como, about halfway between the city centre and modern square with skyscrapers.

The Porta Garibaldi is a bustling street that has great food, shopping and nice architecture. I particularly recommend the Princi bakery that is situated on the lane.

If coming from/going to Malpensa and connecting with the Metro or to/from France, do yourself a favor and use Porta Garibaldi station instead of Centrale, which is over-crowded and filled with scam artists. Not only is Porta Garibaldi free of the vermin, it is less crowded, nearly non-existent lines for ticketing and the Metro is MUCH closer to the platforms. Although the dining is limited, the fare is good and the prices lower.

This entrance to the city once led up to the lake. The stone arch is very cool looking and it seems to be really old. Nice that it’s still here.
