Walking around Pavia
Aug 2021 • Friends
The Cathedral of Pavia, dedicated to Santo Stefano protomartire and Santa Maria Assunta, is the most imposing church in Pavia.
The Duomo is an important Renaissance building. It has a grandiose octagonal masonry dome, one of the largest in Italy in terms of height and width.

Nice attraction

The Duomo of Pavia is a nice sight. One can observe the architecture and art that this place has to offer, while walking at the pretty center of the city. The small square on its front gathers plenty of people during the night as well.

Do not miss this Cathedral in Pavia. Large, beautifull and well preserved. One of the largest in Italy.

Pavia's Skylline.
Jul 2019
The dome of the Cathedral dominates the skyline of central Pavia.
Construction started in 1488 and of the Cathedral of Pavia was an extremely long process, spanning out over four centuries.
From the start of construction, many people contributed to the design of the cathedral, including Leonardo Da Vinci who visited Pavia during the early stages of the cathedral's construction.
The church was not fully completed until the 1930s, more than 400 years after the first stone was laid.
The plan of the Pavia Cathedral is a Greek cross, with three naves flanked by semi-circular chapels. The central nave is twice as wide as those on the side; it is about 30 metres high and divided by two galleries. The centredome has an octagonal plan and is the fourth largest in Italy (97 metres high with a span of 34 metres).
The remains of St. Siro are conserved in the crypt of the Pavia Cathedral, the first bishop and patron saint of the city of Pavia celebrated on 9 December.
The church also contains many other relics and remains of saints and beati, and perhaps most importantly, a precious silver and crystal 17th-century reliquary with the Holy Thorns of the Crown of Christ.
Admission is free, although a small donation will always be appreciated.

Not very well kept!
May 2019 • Family
I think it is the 4th biggest duomo in Italy, and there is also a lot of history behind it, but our impression was that it wasn't as well kept as it should!

Nice Cathedral (would be great if they could put the bell tower back together)
Mar 2018 • Friends
At the southern end of the Piazza della Vittoria, stands the Cathedral, built during the 15th and 16th centuries which also had a bell tower that unfortunately collapsed in 1989 due to reasons which still haven't been certified It would be great if they could reconstruct it as they still have put away all the bricks making it.

Beautiful cathedral,

Not as busy and more accessible than the Milan Duomo, which off course is a more more popular destination.

More impressive inside
Sep 2018 • Couples
From the outside this Duomo appears to be very large, but not very impressive from any side. The real beauty is on the inside where there is beautiful marble, a marble pulpit, a beautiful altar, and a saint under glass.

Stunning Building
Jul 2018 • Family
Again another stunning building in a stunning location. We cannot say how impressive Pavia is to look around. If you are in the area, everything is easily walkable and not to be missed.
