Description:

The Museo delle Antichità Egizie is the only museum other than the Cairo...

The Museo delle Antichità Egizie is the only museum other than the Cairo Museum that is dedicated solely to Egyptian art and culture. Many international scholars, since the decipherer of Egyptian hieroglyphs Jean-François Champollion, who came to Turin in 1824, spend much time pouring over the collections. It was Champollion who famously wrote, “The road to Memphis and Thebes passes through Turin”.The collections that make up today’s Museum, were enlarged by the excavations conducted in Egypt by the Museum’s archaeological mission between 1900 and 1935 (a period when finds were divided between the excavators and Egypt). The Egyptian Museum in Turin has begun 2009 an important project which wants to widen spaces in order to enhance the collections through modern museographical and museological criteria. The Museum will be open all over the period of restoration and the New Egyptian Museum inauguration is scheduled for the year 2015.

Amazing and beyond any expectations. Before going to the museum I had read that it was the second largest in the world, but I personally would have never expected what I saw. It is fabolous, a treasure. Despite spending several hours visiting I know I need to go back.

During my short trip in Turin, I paid a visit to Museo Egizio (amongst the many other museums in Turin). This, by far, is the best museum I have been to in Turin and I really enjoyed the artefacts that were on display. You could easily be in awe of the many mummies and displays that are on show and... First, this is an outstanding museum. Rivals and probably beats The Met in NYC. That said, at least on this Saturday, their were so many tour groups that we could hardly move later in the day. The museum gets busy rather early so be there st opening time and you should be okay.

It is surprising to find such a nice museum related to Egipt close to the Alps. I would advise to buy the tickets in advance to avoid the queue-

To a foreigner, the opening rooms of this museum are perhaps the least interesting because there is a lot on its origins and how Turin wanted to become the Italian capital of Egyptian studies. But then there is a remarkable collection of objects, displayed with the flair Italians have for creating engaging museums and well explained in Englsih and Italian.... More

It took me about 2 1/2 hours to go through. Audio guide included in price was very helpful. I mostly enjoyed learning about the how burial/mummy evolved over time with real examples. Glad I stopped, time for lunch.

Fantastic selection of sarcophagus and has multiple mummies. Get there when it opens prior to the school children or tour guides arrival. Make sure to check opening hours. Only complaint, audio was not working well and it is difficult reading the captions since the lettering is white on clear glass. I would recommend reviewing the audio before starting self guided...
