About
The Early Christian basilica of Saint Vigilius was built outside the city walls presumably around the end of the fourth century. The structure’s original purpose was as a burial place for the missionaries in Anaunia Sisinius, Martyrius, and Alexander, murdered in the Val di Non by pagans on 29 May 397. Alongside the martyrs Vigilius, the third bishop and the patron saint of Trent was also buried.

Dedicated to Saint Vigil, patron saint of the city, the temple is supposedly erected in the place where the saint suffered martyrdom in the fifth century. Construction began in 1212 and lasted several centuries.
It is worth traveling the entire perimeter of the cathedral to appreciate the different styles on each facade.

The Cathedral of Trento is one of the most beautiful churches I have ever visited. Initially I entered from the altar but then, making an external turn, I entered from the front. It is beautiful and the internal stairs leading to the upper floors made of stone are very beautiful

Seat of the Council of Trent of 1545-1563 (fundamental stage of the Catholic reforms after the Lutheran and Calvinist schism.
The first church dates back to the 4th century, then rebuilt in Romanesque-Gothic style, today it is connected to the praetorian palace.
The two external rose windows are characteristic while inside you will find frescoes, sepulchral tombs, main altar, crypt and chapel of the Crucifix.

Duomo di Trento. Another unmissable stop is the Trento Cathedral (Duomo di Trento), dedicated to Saint Vigilio. It was in her ships that decrees were announced in 1563 during the historic Council of Trent. If you are interested in this topic, do not forget to visit the nearby Diocesan Museum (Museo Diocesano), which is located in the halls of Palazzo Pretorio.

The construction dates back to the beginning of 1200. The style is Romanesque-Gothic but the originality of the tower called the octagonal Tiburio attracts attention.
This tower, which stands apart from the rest in its colour and shape, was built in the late 1800s, bringing much criticism to the creator, the architect Nordio.
Interesting rosettes, in particular that of the square representing the Wheel of Fortune.
Then many other medieval friezes such as the Stilofori Lions that support the columns of the Bishop's Gate always on the square side.
Spacious interior that maintains the original architectural style, but with decorations that have been added over the centuries, which have nothing to do with the Romanesque-Gothic style.

The federal building is in the main square. Sober but interesting exteriors. Interiors that are absolutely worth seeing with the stairways that go up the side parts, the twisted columns that recall those of Bernini in Rome. An imposing nave, beautiful to look at, a pleasant surprise.

There is news of a basilica founded in the fourth century by San Vigilio to accommodate the remains of some martyrs; the main impetus for reconstruction, however, is due to Prince Bishop Vanga who, starting from the fifteenth century, founded convents and hospital in this territory; the work continued until the sixteenth century, thus distorting the original Roman-Gothic form.
The artistic apparatus is remarkable but it is perhaps the historical memory that identifies this Cathedral: in it took place much of the Council of Trent.
Those who want to visit it, do not forget the crypt, which preserves traces of primitive construction.
The visit is particularly interesting and, of course, more than recommended

Cathedral of Trento - a beautiful minor basilica built between 1545 and 1563. It is located in the heart of the city of Trento. The church was large, impressive and accessible free of charge through a side entrance.

Early Sunday before Mass , it was solemnly silent. Bit of restoration work going on which means, you can't access all areas comfortably.
Historically significant of course but I much prefer to view it from outside as it's stunning in the square.
Only a brief visit here,as I wanted to be at the wonderful Diocesan Museum for the 10am opening.

A rather simple and small cathedral but not one to be missed. Magnificent frescos adorn the walls and a beautiful outlook and feeling. Free entrance. Well worth a visit.
