About
The little deconsecrated church preserves underground the finds of the primitive paleochristian funerary Latin cross shaped basilica of the 5th century with several graves, including those of the first bishops of the Aostan Diocese. The church hosts some temporary exhibitions on the ground floor.

Five stars if you are interested in early Christian architecture
Sep 2019 • Couples
Underneath the former St Lorenzo church is a wealth of architectural detail of the original early Christian building. This museum can be enjoyed in two ways.

You can stroll through the museum on raised walkways above the foundations - five to ten minutes.

Alternatively there is a fascinating video which covers the history of the site in great detail. When we arrived there was no one ahead of us in the museum so the video was started for us in English. We found it fascinating, all the more so as the video was not in a little alcove but in the middle of the excavations so we could look around and relate to what was said. I think it lasted for about thirty minutes but we rather lost track of time.

From our experience, three stars is a bit parsimonious but I realise that if this is not to your taste or you get the video half way through in Italian or other foreign language your enjoyment will be much much less

Interesting history of early Christianity
Sep 2017 • Couples
This is one of the 4 Roman attractions included in a single 7 euro ticket

This is the least impressive of the 4 attractions included in the ticket, it is the remains of Paleochristian Church (5th to 6th century) and it is beneath the present Basilica di San Lorenzo which is now an art gallery.
Opposite the Basilica across the square is the collegiate church of Sant'Orso and its cloister - we just peeked through the door, in retrospect we should have made time for a visit inside to see the cloister.

Entering the Paleochristian Church is through an entrance on the south wall of the Basilica and this gets you underground to observe the original church and the foundations of the cathedral. Proof of the existence of early Christianity in Aosta

Tip: Best order for seeing all the attractions, included in the single ticket, is to start from the smallest wow factor to the best wow factor:
1 The early Christian Basilica of San Lorenzo
2 The Roman Theater remains
3 MAR - Regional Archaeological Museum
4 Forum and cryptoporticus

One of the sights included in the entry ticket for the amphitheatre. Old tombs kept the kids occupied asking questions...!
