It probably would have been nice to see something... but any path with dogs is impassable, there is a ban everywhere. In 2024 it really seems senseless to me not to let the dogs do the routes given that from 15 July to 30 August it is possible and there are more people who theoretically disturb the local fauna much more than a dog every I don't know how much which tours in January. Not recommended for those with dogs. We won't come anymore.

A wonderful place. It is better to have a car to reach the park and to drive around, although buses are available. Our concern was that the park has only one cable car at it would be difficult to take very long and high trekking paths with our 2.5-years-old child (ascends150-200m are fine, but for anything more I had to carry him in the backpack-seat). This is what we recommend for daily walks. (1) a very pleasant walk from Cogne to Lilaz, almost flat, along a beautiful valley, 3 km one way, one can take a bus on the way back. In Lilaz there is a nice waterfall. (2) cable car from Cogne to Belvedero (2064). It works three hours in the morning and in the afternoon. We strongly recommend to start walking to the left (East) from the top station. There is a loop way passing Montseuc (2332), affordable with only one place close to the "summit" that is a bit too steep, but the West path is a rather steep path through the forest and it is much easier to descend there than to ascend. Eventually we made all way to Cogne on foot. (3) A lot of walks start from village Gimillan (1774). You can get their by car and there is enough parking around the village. An affordable path is to North-West via Ecloseur and to Pila (2003) along a gorge and through peaceful meadows. (4) Another path is from Gimillan to Arpisson (2328), North-East. The height difference is 500m, which was at our limit with the child. But the path is really beautiful and there is only one part which is quite steep. The descend to Epinel we did not take as it appeared to be very steep. In addition to these paths, there is a botanical garden, mining museum, child playground, sightseeing and shopping in the village (a bit noisy as there are many people). One can buy food in the village - there are many fine shops. There is a huge free parking in the center of Cogne. It was a fantastic holiday!

We stayed in the Aosta Valley for 3 nights and spent a couple of days exploring this beautiful National Park at the end of August 2018. We drove to Lillaz, which is the end of the road in the Cogne Valley, and parked for 4 euro for the entire day. Ticket machines here take coins and you display the ticket on your car dashboard. There is no entrance fee for the park. From the carpark you can see glaciers, mountains and the river running through the valley. The drive up is scenic and there's also small convenience store, gelateria, bar etc in Lillaz.
On our first day we spent a few hours doing a simple walk and dipped our toes in the waterfalls in Lillaz. This was really peaceful and refreshing. There's a walkway giving details about the rocks and minerals found in the park too (in Italian).
Day 2 was our big one! We followed the trail markers to Lake / Lago Loie... this is an 'E' rated track from Lillaz to Lago Loie (#13) and looping back to Lillaz via a different route (#12). We were expecting approximately 5.5 hour hike but it took us close to 8 hours to get back to the carpark. As a guide for other parents, we were hiking with a very capable 8 year old and a 4 year old who walked for about 1-2 hours, carried in a pack for the remainder.
The hike was incredible. The landscape is breathtaking... mountains, rivers, snow at the end of August. Unfortunately we just missed most of the wildflowers but the fauna more than made up for this. Our kids had a fabulous time identifying so many different types of butterflies, we found marmots and a frog in the alpine pastures of Alpe Bardoney and on our descent we encountered a chamois and an ibex. The lake itself was beautiful, it's glassy surface reflected the mountains and we were the only people there. The view of the valley from above the lake was breathtaking.
For our family this was an amazing experience. The chamois and ibex sightings certainly helped spur us home. It was a longer and harder hike than we anticipated, so I advise to take plenty of water and snacks if hiking with kids. Some of the ascents were long, steep and tough. This is not a leisurely stroll but when you get back to Lillaz you will really feel like you've accomplished something incredible, we certainly did!
Important tip: the trail markers are not consistent for the entire hike... when in doubt during the ascent follow the signs to Bardoney... shortly after crossing the river (at a bridge) there appears a junction: flat along the river or uphill to Bardoney - head up to Bardoney!! The rest is pretty well posted for Lago Loie and the return to Lillaz.

I am already an old man but I have discovered the alpine walks only lately, too late! It is one of the best and worst experiences possible, to go high in the mountains, experience lots of hardship and difficulties, and get to places where not many people get and see unbelievable sights. I have now walked in the Pyrenees, in Switzerland, in France and in Germany, but Gran Paradiso beats them all. This trip to Gran Paradiso lasted five days and I walked about half the distance I had planned (and some bits twice when I got lost!) I did mostly the Alta Via Nr 2, which is the most difficult (although everything there is classified E for extreme...) and demanding. It is not for faint-hearted, not for overweight, not something to be done on a moment's notice. You must be in good shape, able to walk up very steep mountains starting from around 1500 m and reaching up to 3000. It is hard! But sooo rewarding when you are up there. But of course one mistake I learned is that never think that the worst is over now. It can get worse. I don't know which is worse, to climb up a steep cliff or to go down... But in the end there is an enormous reward. I have lots of photos to prove that! The best time to visit is definitely September, when it is still warm, all the Italians have vanished and the refugios are still open. You don't need to carry much stuff as the places are very comfortable and you will always find a hotel (although once I had planned to stop in an enticing place, just to be disappointed because it was closed and the next place was an hour walk away.
I don't want to scare you; there are lots of easy paths (avoid the Alta Via!) and there is everything for everybody. One alternative is to walk with a light backpack from one valley to another and another is to come by car, leave your stuff in the car or hotel and walk very lightly on day trips. But then you lose the possibility of seeing every day something new and not being dependent on one place. There are very good guidebooks (the Cicerone is the best) but don't trust them 100 per cent. One unpleasant experience I had was that when I had just descended a very high slope and was approaching la Joux - the path was closed and nowhere to go (backtracking was out of the question 5 pm...) I noticed that others had ignored the closure so I went and it was not fun as the track had been left uncared for. I never found you why, because I took a dangerous short track and got to another path, but it was a quite unpleasant experience. But no matter, I am going there again next year, this time with the family! The views, the places, the loneliness, the stillness, the extremes!

If you want to appreciate how great the US Park Service is, go to Gran Paradiso. We were in Aosta and came to the park to find a short hike. This is a national park -- with no visitors center, no trail maps, and no trail markers that we could find. We took a walk along the river, which passed what looked like a shantytown of decrepit house trailers and RVs. Big disappointment!

Hello mr Thelwell, italian np are really different from US np, the borders of the Park are not fenced: the five Park valleys can be visited free-of-charge (obviously in compliance with existing regulations) at any time and there is no entry ticket!
There are 9 visitor centres and the network of paths cross the Park for over 500 Km, we don't know where you were exactly but every path has a starting point with signs and signals indicating the route, the trail (if available), the journey time and some behaviors to avoid for the people safety and the safeguarding of flora and fauna within the protected area.
Before a visit we suggest to inquire on our website pngp.it/en or at our touristic office by email: info@pngp.it

This park is definitely underestimated.
You can reach the park from north - Cogne , or South – Ceresole Reale.
The park is well kept as a nature's heaven and therefore no 'artificial' attractions.
There are many well marked trails/paths in the valleys and mountains, vary in length and difficulty. Water streams and waterfalls, beautiful Alpine lakes, outstanding views are everywhere.
Lillaz waterfalls near Cogne and the road to Colle del Nivolet from Ceresole Reale are not to be missed.
Overall a splendid place to tour !!!

We drove from Aosta to Cogne to view the wildflower meadow. It was not in bloom. But we walked in the meadow on the path, and took a stroll in the city of Cogne. We had blueberry pie and cappuccino in a small bar.

Looking for moderate or hard treks ? Go to Gran Paradiso. Get the maps form the tourst office in Aosta and pick your trip - try the rifugio treks during the summer as you can buy food here. All valleys are beautiful.
Hiked with family and kids loved the treks - ranging from 3 - 8 hours and varying difficulty.

This place wasn't included in our original plan since we were staying in Italy for 5 days only during the Christmas holidays and thankgod we didn't miss it. I have to point out that it was very hard to find information about the place other than private companies who are marketing for their camping/hiking tours, which was annoying. So hopefully trip advisor can add Cogne-Aosta as an attraction rather than the whole gran paradiso park because Cogne is easily accessible by car ( 1:45 min from Turin(torino) ), it has both easy and rough hiking trails, it has mini ski and snowboarding spaces for kids plus skiing slopes for adults. Very nice town for someone who wants to chill and have an easy hike. We drove to Cogne from torino then went to Milano on the same day (2 hrs and 45 min). You dont wanna miss it!

Buongiorno,

Saluti
