The Gattamelata monument, the work of Donatello, was the first large equestrian monument after those of antiquity. It is located in Piazza del Santo but unfortunately when we were in Padua it was under restoration and caged so that we could not appreciate it. Sin.

We were able to visit the construction site of the monument which will be restored. Beautiful visit with an expert and passionate guide. We will never see this splendid statue up close like this again, of which we have been able to appreciate the details and history.

Fine workmanship, synthesis, detail. expression, poise depicting a mercenary. The patina and the birds touching and go add to it. However it is strictly in positional geometry stretching the observer's angle of elevation that is it is placed very high. Fine relief work at the 'wardroby' pedestal.
Juxtaposed to Sant Antonio's Basiica it adds and detracts too. The multidome brick edifice has a corresponging byzantinische + military tent camp gravitas, Unique in toto and free and without queueing

We had our hotel room looking onto this statue, but underneath scaffolding unfortunately. If it could be viewed, this Piazza would hold 4 must-sees

Initially, I didn't think this bronze equestrian statue could possibly be important. There it stood, on a high pedestal to the left of the Basilica of Sant Antonio's entrance. Placed right at the edge of a main street, it looked at traffic and was blocked by nearby souvenir stands. As I approached from the church, the horse's tail faced me and I had no reason to think this would be a worthwhile stop. But at a much closer viewpoint, I was amazed by the details in the horse and rider. Created by Donatello, this early Renaissance statue, with its focus on naturalism, became the prototype for Western equestrian statues.

Installed in 1453, the statue shows Gattamelata (Erasmo da Narmi), the leader of mercenary troops for the Republic of Venice, astride a massive horse. In armor, Gattamelata carries a baton and has a long sword. He sits upright with a serious expression. The horse looks to the left and down at any observer below. Its left front hoof is balanced on a small cannon ball.

After seeing this remarkable work up close, I crossed the traffic circle to get a more global perspective. During my visit here, the basilica seemed to be the main attraction for the myriad visitors to the square. I saw no others showing an interest in Donatello's creation.

A beautiful bronze monument like most monuments in Italy, full of history, well maintained.
It was built by the famous artist Donatello on a request by the Venetian General Gattamellata 's widow.
The honour of having your statue riding a horse (Equestrian Monument) was given to this general although he was not a victorious leader, but the rulers of that era thought he deserved it.

The commander of the Venetian armies after successfully defending Brescia and Verona in 1438, Gattamelata is buried in the adjacent Pontifical Basilica of St. Anthony of Padua. The equestrian statue by Donatello is a masterpiece of the lost wax process, the first such equestrian statue created during the Renaissance. Recalling the classicism of Roman portraiture, the power, humanity and naturalism of the statue became a model still used today. After taking a look, make sure to visit the Basilica and be equally amazed by the Donatello altar and Crucifix.

This statue was for the coming centuries the example, how to make a statue of a noble on the horse. Erasmo de Narmi - the Gattamelata was a leader of the Venetian troops.
