Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Beautiful square where the famous basilica of Saint Antonio is located with souvenir shops, bars and restaurants all around.

A pilgrimage to St. Anthony's was our prime reason for visiting Padova, as we were married, as well our children baptized in this Saint's Church in our hometown.
After completing that (see the review of the Basilica) we spent some time on this beautiful sq. There are many souvenir stalls selling predominantly religious items dedicated to St. Anthony.
Having bought some of them, we enjoyed the Basilica's splendor from a cafe across right at the Piazza. Time we will always remember.

It is a very pleasant place to be just next to the church. Our hotel was close by so we walked though here a few times. The only downside was a gypsy woman who begged there.

Visiting the cathedral with its beautiful interior is quite a moving experience. The chapels are beautiful, and the presence of the relics of St. Anthony make for misty-eyed moments.

The Piazza del Santo is the square in front and around the Basilica of St. Anthony of Padua. The place is dedicated to welcome the faithful who come in pilgrimage to the church and most days, it is full of people from all over the world. However, it is also a center of daily life for locals, who meet in some of the cafes or stores that surround the square. The square is dominated by the large church. In front of the church stands the bronze equestrian statue of the Gattamelata, a monument that remembers the Venetian general, Erasmo da Narni, who died in Padua in 1443. The square housed the Fair of St. Anthony since about 1257, later moved to Prato della Valle (around 1596). In addition to the Basilica, the School of the Saint, the Civic Museum, and the St. George Oratorio complete the historical buildings on the square. There is also a large number of stands that peddle tourist souvenirs, although the higher quality goods can be found inside the Basilica's gift shop or some of the better stores that surround the square.

San Antonio is the main reason I often go to Padova.
The place and the surrounding is extremely beatuiful.
All gives you a sense of peace and spirituality I really crave for.
Shops, memorabilia stores are surprisingly not over abundant.
Somehow the place, the city, the surrounding are respecting the Franciscan life of this Saint.

It's next to the Basilica of Sant'Antonio, to whom it owes its name . It can't be therefore quiet. There are always tourist groups visiting the town but also worshipers coming from every corner of the whole world. Even so, it's not so crowded. You never have the feeling that you lose your group or your belongings. The stalls around have mostly objects connected with Saint Anthony.
The Basilica and the Saint's School cover most part of the square. The remaining area shows some characteristic old buildings of Padua with a lot of French windows and colourful balconies.
In the middle of the square you can't miss Donatello's equestrian bronze statue of Erasmo da Narni also known as Gattamelata.
Weather permitting you may have your Espresso here to listen to the poliphony of the visitors and take photos of the huge Basilica from different points of view.

People tend to head to Rome, Florence and Venice, where they are guaranteed to be met with crowds. Padova (Padua) has just as much of the old-world charm and character tourists look for, but without the horrendous crowds fighting for a place. We did not have time to see all of the attractions, as this was just a day-trip, but we would love to go back and see it all.

When we were there it was quiet in August so you could take your time. The summer sun however was quite oppressive so we were glad to get into the cooler basilica of St Anthony
