The area
Neighbourhood: Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.

It is located in a quiet corner of Calle dei Mori, in the Cannaregio district.
It is here, within these walls, that Tintoretto spent much of his life, creating some of the most iconic works of art in Venetian history.
It is incredible that his house has remained largely intact over the centuries, as it represents an authentic journey into the past.

We were looking for a list of free sights in Venice when we read an English newspaper article which mentioned the house where the famous painter Tintoretto lived and painted. The corner of Fondamenta dei Mori where the house is located has a white statue with a metal nose of the Greek trader Roiba. By the entrance to Tintoretto's house is another statue of a turbaned trader. We could not get into the house. There is a studio in one side. The whole setting is nice but that's about all.

Jacopo Robusti, better known as Tintoretto was one of the last famous Venetian Renaissance painters (1518-94) the eldest of 21 children. Giovanni his father was a dyer, or tintore so his son got the nickname of Tintoretto, apparently the family originated from Brescia, in Lombardy, some say the Tuscan town of Lucca was the origin of the family.
In childhood Jacopo, began painting on the dyer's walls; his father, noticing his talent took him to the studio of Titian to see if he could be trained as an artist. He work is characterized by its muscular figures, dramatic gestures.
He lived in a 16th century house for about 20 years with his family on the Campo dei Mori, travellers to Venice can now rent this one bedroom apartment on the first floor.
At Palazzo Mastelli, just next to Tintoretti's house, there are 4 statues of ancient oriental traders with turbans on, reminding us that Venice once had enormous trading links with the Middle East and Asia.
Tintoretto’s final resting place if in the beautiful Gothic church of Madonna dell ‘Orto, where you can see his tomb on the right hand side of the altar. When wandering round this church you will see many of his paintings in the chapels = well worth a visit.
Tintoretto's house is situated in the lovely quiet district fo Cannareggio at Fondamente dei Mori 3399, just next to the Campo die Mori.

This area of the city was absolutely love, after wandering through the getto area, across a beautiful very old iron bridge you wander along the side of a very quiet canal in an area of Cannareigo.
You then come across the wonderful statue or an oriental trader, look above the door is a plaque to read.
The house is now a studio, with a beautiful rental apartment above.

It’s a charming housing in a charming area. Interesting architecture. Beautifully lit when light bounces of the adjacent canal. But sadly that is it.

We had enjoyed so much seeing works by Tintoretto in various Venetian museums and churches that our guide suggested a stroll by his original home in Canareggio. It was a short walk from the Ghetto area where we were headed. The interesting carved cornerstone figure & Turkish turbaned carving mark the area. No museum, just the childhood home. Enjoy!
