The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.

The project of the New Procurations in general repeats the idea of rhythmic arcades, on which two floors are set. The beautiful monotony of the elongated buildings also makes the eye slide, turning the square framed by them into a kind of spyglass designed to observe the main and object of the Venetian universe of the Cathedral of San Marco. The author of the project of the New Procurations was Vincenzo Scamozzi. The construction, begun in 1582 under his leadership, was completed after the death of the master by the architect Baldassarre Longhen. The wing that connected the buildings of the Old and New Procurations at the beginning of the 19th century is called the Napoleon Wing.

The Procuratie Nuove (the New Procurators building) is one of the main buildings on St Mark's Square and by far not one of the most striking. Though from an architectural point of view it is a good example of Classical and Neo Classical architecture and has a long and varied history (From office to the Procurators of St Mark's, to seat of the Napoleonic and then Austrian governors, to Italian Royal residence to museums), the overall impression from the outside is of a slightly run down and not maintained building - including the many historic coffee shops.

This the "new" (nuove) wing of the structures that enclose St. Mark's Square on 3 sides. This is where that famous Caffe Florian (with the 15 EU coffees) is housed. This is where the orange-shirted anti-loitering task force puts their all into chasing anyone who would dare (in 90 degree heat and humidity to match) set their bottoms down on a stair for a brief moment. No loitering means what it (and the force) says.
The new wing (circa 1586) was completed in 1640. It had more office space for the men chosen to be the procurators for Venice. These representatives lived and worked in the Procuratie buildings. After the 1200's there were 9 of these administrators and apparently they needed a lot of elbow room.
About 250 years later, Napoleon demolished the historical church between the two buildings, built the Napoleon Wing to connect them, and this is more or less what we see today.
There are still 7 procurators functioning in Venice; they oversee the architectural control over St. Mark's Basilica and that is about it. How many procurators does it take to replace a light bulb, one may ask? Looks like 7.
The Correr Museum is an absolute must-see (plan for enough time); the combo ticket allows for additional no-cost entry to the Doge's Palace. Get up early; every minute is precious and goes way too fast.

The building that defines the southern border of Piazza San Marco was constructed in the late 1500’s – early 1600’s to provide more office space. Today libraries and a portion of the Correr Museum utilize it along with Café Florian, which opened in 1720

Opossite and across the St Mark's square from the Old Procuratie, this building is not as grand as the old one but houses some nice shops and restaurants as well.

Procuratie Nuove is on the south side of St Mark's Square and is very much of the classical side.
The arcade shop includes Caffe Florian which we went in for some macarons. It is regarded as one of the world's oldest coffee shops.

When we had previously visited San Marco Square, we had been blown away by the magnificent buildings surrounding the square.
While in Venice again, on our most recent visit, we again made our way to San Marco Square to experience the ambience of this magnificent public square.
The square is surrounded on three sides by huge, elegant buildings. One of these buildings is the Procuratie Nuove. This building, located on the southern side of the square, dates back to the 16th century.
The Procuratie Nuove has a distinctive and appealing facade. Located at ground level, behind the arches of its extensive veranda, are a number of small shops. There is at least one coffee shop, several gift shops and a foreign exchange dealer.
Despite having to battle through the hordes of tourists, we again enjoyed our visit to this stunning building!

Procuratie Nuove (new) went up on the south side of Piazza San Marco to offer additional work and living space for city officials. Designed to blend with Procuratie Vecchie (old), the long structure across from this one, the new wing was completed in 1640. Together with another huge building between them on the west, they contribute greatly to the square's ambiance. During our December visit, however, restoration work under way on Procuratie Nuove's exterior detracted from the unified look that I have come to expect at this massive square.
Arcade shops and restaurants at ground level continued to operate, though, and visitors, as usual, poured into pricey Caffee Florian, a coffee shop that opened here in 1720. Even on the cold, drizzly day that we wandered by, we saw tables and chairs that had been set up in the square itself for customers at various venues. The Correr Museum, which features exhibits on Venice art, history and culture, has rooms upstairs in the Procuratie Nuove and in the adjacent Ala Napoleonica.
The good-value Museum of St. Mark's Square ticket gives admission to the Correr Museum, Dodge's Palace, Archeological Museum and Monumental Rooms of the National Library.
