Vibrant Campo in centre od Dorsoduro

Not much to see, except the San Barnaba Church which had a Leonardo da Vinci Exhibition when we were there in August 2016. One or two cafes, for a quick stop en route to the Accademia bridge, or a gentle walk back towards Piazzale Roma or the Ferrovia.

This is a busy and vibrant campo. Several restaurants, none sampled this year, so no comment. Also a good exhibition in the church which is worth a look. There is a Gondolieri stop here which offers the usual far, the view of the back canals is interesting. The highlight, for me, is Signor Blum on the corner by the canal... More

Just want to warn Indiana Jones enthusiasts! You will NOT find the library inside the church as it is showed in the movie! The church has never been changed into a library, and there is no X on the floor. Just so you know :) Had to pay 8 euro to enter the church as they had a Da Vinci... More

Campo San Barnaba is a popular place to eat, have an ice cream, coffee or a glass of wine. It is dominated by the church of the same name which is the site of a commercial, permanent exhibition of replicas of assorted machines conceived by Leonardo da Vinci. The campo is near Ca Rezzonico, the Accademia as well as Campo... More

This is where the bazar scene from Indiana Jones and the temple of doom was filmed - if you look closely it is somewhat recognizable from the film. A nice quiet spot but hot in the midday sun without much cover.

A bit quieter than other parts of the city, there's a great bar with plenty of seating outside to sit and take a break from walking around the city. The floating fruit and veg market is in one corner and the Gondoliers operating from the square are genuinely happy and friendly and appear to thoroughly enjoy their jobs.

Good place to sit with a coffee or having lunch with an Aperol. Lots to see with passing people and near the fruit boat

Beautiful canals. Gelato everywhere, locals talking while looking like they are arguing. What is not to like?

We couldn't come to Venice and miss this piece of movie history. The Church in the square served as the facade for that amazing Library scene in 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade'!!

Used in Indiana Jones movie (the exterior). Very large building but was unable to view inside. Has a wonderful restaurant opposite where Indiana Jones came through drain hatch (not real) in the movie.

Staying in Dorsoduro / Accademia

Neighbourhood Profile
Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.
