Neighbourhood: San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.

This church was originally founded in the 98th century but was rebuilt again in the 10th and 12th centuries before its final iteration in the 17th century. The elaborate Baroque facade with its mass of statues and decorations was built in 1668 whilst the interiors were refurbished in 1632.

The interior has a single nave with four side chapels (two either side opposite each other) and another two, one either side of the main altar. It is in one of the side altars that you will find the beautiful painting by Tintoretto "Washing of the Feet".

The main altar is dominated by a sculpture and painting depicting Moses at Mount Sinai receiving the Tablets. The ceiling is largely unadorned,

Not a very large church compared to others in the city, but the facade is spectacular, the richly decorated in the style of mature Venetian Baroque. It was built in the 8th century, but it was rebuilt several times. Its interior is also worth a visit. Inside you can find ''The Wash of Feet'' byTintoretto.

It is located in the San Marco district, this splendid baroque church whose entry is free. The interior has a single nave. Full of wonderful paintings, including a Tintoretto "The Washing of the Feet" and "The Last Supper" by Jacopo Palma the Younger.

You will find San Moise Church on Campo San Moise at the back of St Mark’s Square and on your way to the Ponte de l’Academia.

The Chiesa di San Moise is not one of the major churches of Venice but one you should take the time to visit.

You will most likely be very impressed by its imposing Baroque facade.

It's really lavish and some people find it ‘over the top’ but I find it really stunning!

The church was built in the early 17th century but the clock tower is said to be dating from the 13th/14th centuries.

This age difference is reflected in the architectural styles which emphasize each other..

The white facade dates from 1668 and is absolutely covered with elaborate carvings, sculptures and statues.

You can spend ages admiring it but I encourage you to enter, as the interior is equally lavish.

As you enter the church your eyes focus on the superb altar.

This is Baroque at its best!

Some think ‘Baroque at its worst’ as it depicts Moise on Mont Sinai standing on a huge pile of rocks!

It is a bit ‘over the top’ I agree but this precisely what makes the church so attractive.

As you eyes adjust to the dim light you discover the various paintings from the 17th century.

As in most churches in Venice you’ll find paintings by the great Venetian Masters and San Moise Church has a ‘Washing of the feet’ by Tintoretto.

This painting alone is one good reason to step inside!

This church is really near St. Mark's Place. It is very kind to visitors. You can walk in for free. My suggestion is to sit down and admire rich decorations in the building. You need to stop again before the main facade. It is one of the most decorated Baroque facades in Venice.

This Baroque style built initially in the 8th century is dedicated to Moses. The elaborate Baroque facade, dating from 1668, is profusely decorated with sculptures. Of special significance is the bust of Vincenzo Fini over the entry door. Since personal statues in public spaces were forbidden in Venice, he circumvented the law by putting his bust on the facade of a church.

We generally stay at a nearby hotel when we are in Venice so we pass this church often and stop in from time to time. You will pass it if you walk the main route between St. Mark's and the Accademia Bridge. Fine carvings adorn the exterior and often there are artists sketching outside and selling their work. Not worth a detour to find it, in my opinion, but believe me, if you are in Venice for more than a day or two you WILL pass by.
