It is said that Napoleon called San Marco "the drawing room of Europe." And it is a breathtakingly beautiful place. But the square has long been a lure for massive numbers of pigeons, drawn by the massive numbers of tourists who readily feed them. While the tourists happily post for photos amid the flock, there are concerns that the birds' presence--and what they leave behind--will damage the centuries old architecture and art work.

This is perhaps the biggest square in Venice. The view from the far end facing the San Marco Basilica is simply amazing. it very touristy but if are lucky to land there on a full moon night the feel is simply amazing. just take a walk in the midnight when there is not much crowd.

Large square with lots of great architecture and interesting things to learn. Standing in the middle you can see all the different eras in which the Square was built, each wall having different architecture and heights. The church and tower are also wonderful. The area is plagued with birds

Loved the views from here. I didn't go up campanile / bell tower since for some reason it was closed. Really wanted to, but hopefully next time! I visited the square a few times as I'm not a huge fan of places when it's super busy. The first night I got there I walked via it to my hotel and... More

The main attractions here are the St. Mark's Basilica and The Campanile, the bell tower of the St.Mark's which is the tallest structure in Venice. Great place to dine, eat gelato and shop. You can find all the high-end designer shops in this area and there were also lots of souvenir shops selling Murano glass. However, this area can get... More

Of course you don't want to miss this when you are in Venice. It is amazing to be standing in the middle of someplace you have seen painted in pictures that are centuries old.

The square has many sightseeing options, mainly the Tower, the Doge and the Basilica. There are restaurants and shops on the square but they are more pricey than those down the side streets. At high tide, the square can be flooded which is great to experience.

you can grab a cup of coffee and some food sit in this square and have a beautiful time admiring the cathedral of St Mark. Some of the high end restaurants here have a stage of their own with really good musical show which i loved listening to. If you have money you have dinner at one of these places... More

St Marks square must be visited when in Venice but I would suggest that to get the most from your experience you do it as part of a tour preferably a free walking tour. It a bit of a building site at present but do not be put off. To use a toilet visit a restaurant and get a coffee... More

No one will be disappointed at the passage this place. Next to the each other hearty cafes, restaurants, bars. The terraces are at nice weather full. Unfortunately the prices for drinks etc.. very high. But lingering is really a unique feeling.

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
