It is said that Napoleon called San Marco "the drawing room of Europe." And it is a breathtakingly beautiful place. But the square has long been a lure for massive numbers of pigeons, drawn by the massive numbers of tourists who readily feed them. While the tourists happily post for photos amid the flock, there are concerns that the birds' presence--and what they leave behind--will damage the centuries old architecture and art work.

Did an escorted tour here for 4 with Venetian Tour. Very easy to arrange our guide Fioana was extremely pleasant understandable and more than knowledgeable. Two hours we took in so much information at leisurely pace. 150 euro for 4. She even arranges our Doges Palace entrance tickets. 19 euro each

Great central hub of Venice. Pigeons are returning in large numbers. Stop and listen to music in front of coffee house. Visit square at all times of day and night. Even Sunday night at 10pm still people mingling. Good atmosphere.

This is probably the 2nd thing to do in Venice after the Grand Canal. While it was a freezing cold day, I did enjoy being at San Mark's Square along with the hundreds of other people. It's true what they say about "the more the merrier". Not to be missed when in Venezia...btw the basilica looks great at dawn. Do... More

Venice in general is a Wonder to see but it's all the different sections that puts you in Awe .. St Marks Square is the epitome of Venice .. Old Town that takes you back in time .. Just stand in the middle and look around , breathtaking .. A true Gem !!!!!!

The Piazza is grand in scale with a fantastic view of the eponymous Basilica and Campanile on one end. Try to visit in late afternoon, where the setting sun casts a lovely golden hue on the Basilica. Plenty of pigeons to keep the young ones entertained. But beware of the plentiful touts who will give you a handful of grain... More

The Square is filled with as many pigeons as people so you have to be aware of low flying birds. The square is flanked by some great jeweller's and watch factors. Well worth a visit

You can spend your evenings walking here, shopping at one of the many souvenir shops or just having a coffee at one of the café’s where you may see some live music going on. You may not want to eat your dinner there as the restaurants are super pricey and give you less value for what you pay. However, evenings... More

How exciting to see all these special places. But beware when the tide comes in as you can get very wet feet.

Must visit place! In fact this is my 2nd visit to here...I'm still coming this way! Very pleasant walk along the bay areas and watching and shopping along the way down to the St Mark square. After some walk up and down across bridges. It came to the famous st mark square where you can expect the bell tower, cathedral,... More

You should not visit Venice without seeing St Mark's Square. It is huge! The Doges' Palace and the Basilica di San Marco are both located here and are well worth seeing.

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
