It is said that Napoleon called San Marco "the drawing room of Europe." And it is a breathtakingly beautiful place. But the square has long been a lure for massive numbers of pigeons, drawn by the massive numbers of tourists who readily feed them. While the tourists happily post for photos amid the flock, there are concerns that the birds' presence--and what they leave behind--will damage the centuries old architecture and art work.

The Piazza is a must visit on any trip to Venice and the Basilica itself is unforgettable. Carnivale is the best time of all to explore the piazza and the city but one warning: the restaurants, coffee shops, etc in the Piazza are VERY expensive so make sure you check the prices before you order!

We had a lovely time watching the carnival activities in the square. Spent over an hour watching the glass blowing stand.

Obviously an iconic place in Venice and has to be seen and it is nice to sit there with probably the world’s most expensive coffee or espresso and it’s great to watch the carnival goers all dressed up and wandering around. However there are much nicer more authentic squares in other districts in Venice off the beaten track and more... More

It's a beautiful square! What I would like to suggest is to feed the peonage as they like sitting on your head, shoulders and are very polite:)

It's a fantastic place to visit while in Venice - one of those don't miss spots. But don't plan to shop, or eat in the area - the places are definitely overpriced

What an amazing square, too much to see. Unfortunately for us when we got here there was the annual carnival, with thousands of people in costumes. Was great to see but the crowds interfered with us being able to enjoy the surroundings, we should have researched events in Venice before booking for the weekend we did. Still worth a visit if... More

This is the beating heart of the City and it is easy to spend a long time here, admiring the frontage of St Marks' Basilica, the Doges Palace, the Campanile and the elegant buildings surrounding the square. There are cafes and tables all round the square and the prices reflect the popularity of the place. The three drawbacks are the... More

It is a very big square with lovely buildings surrounding it. Hard to take it all in, because it was very busy when we were there. Lots of shops and restaurants surrounding it as well as the Cathedral and other buildings.

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
