A masterpiece of Gothic architecture, the building and its sculptural...

A masterpiece of Gothic architecture, the building and its sculptural decoration date from various periods. The interior, with works by artists such as Titian, Veronese, Tintoretto, A.Vittoria and Tiepolo, includes vast council chambers, superbly decorated residential apartments, and austere prison cells. Along the facades of the Palace run loggias that overlook St. Mark’s Square and the lagoon. The combined entrance ticket to the St. Mark’s Square Museums grants access to the Doge’s Palace, Museo Correr, Museo Archeologico Nazionale and Monumental Rooms of Biblioteca Marciana.

The best part of visiting the Doge's Palace is learning about the development of Venice. It has a stunning history and it all comes together when you visit the Palace. The architecture of the building is impressive, along with the artwork on the walls and ceilings This is truly a must see.

Skip the long queues and get a behind the scenes guided tour. Worth every penny and then you get to tour the rest of the palace at your leisure. Combine this with a trip up the Campanile for the best views in Venice! A truly fabulous day and one that we will always remember

A great place to visit to learn more about Venice's interesting history. I wouldn't label this as a must-see as it depends on what you are interested in doing while in Venice, but my husband really enjoyed seeing the grandeur of the palace, the eeriness of the prison, and crossing the bridge of sighs.

I would recommend going to see the Doges' Palace, but I would pre book to avoid the queues. Every room has fantastic decorated ceilings and amazing paintings on the walls. Every room I found breathtaking , we paid for an Audio guide which was very informative. You can pay extra to see other rooms, we did not do this. You... More

All I remembered was it was covered in paintings and gilt. We're my memories right! It is a fascinating testament to luxury. Although there is no furniture, the walls and the ceiling are quite splendid. Two tips: Get you ticket at the Correr museum across Piazza San Marco as the line is shorter, and, if you want to do the... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
