Neighbourhood: Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.

Easy and cheap way to access Venice from the airport
Good mode of transport connecting the airport terminal and Venice. It was easy to navigate and figure out way around. We had to wait in a queue for over an hour though which was frustrating. But this was around midday so I guess the boats have stopped for lunch. It’s a lovely way to enter Venice but you don’t see much from the boat as we were in the lower deck

Too small boats for too many passengers
We took the alilaguna from the airport to the city center. A few minutes too late for the 11:50 boat, we thought we had to wait 15 minutes for the next boat. The boats were way too small however, not all waiting passengers could get on, and in the end we had to queu one hour before we could leave. The small boats on a busy line is real bad planning.

A few days in Vence before a beautiful cruise.
I love Venice. I had been there before, but only for a short cruise stop. We saw so much more this time. It's very crowded; even in October! We stayed in a hotel near the Rialto bridge (which accounted for the crowds). Unfortunately for cruise visitors, you can't dock right in Venice anymore. They have found that this is ruining the canal system. So, you have to go to a place called Chioggia which is over an hour away! Hopefully, the city will find a better spot to dock cruise ships. We spent time in the Jewish Ghetto (the oldest one in the world). Well worth the trip if this is of interest to you. The tour of the Doges Palace however, we found to be a waste of time.

Extremely rude and disrespectful staff on board. I was shouted at by the man taking tickets accusing myself of “not having ears” and then shoved onto a boat.

Dirty boat, rude staff - stay away from a corrupt company.

Operator it’s very hard to get in contact with
On arrival they dropped us off in a vaporeto stop which was 100m to our hotel. When we booked the departure transfer 1.5 days in advance, they took more than 12 hours to let us know that they were not picking us up from the same stop but that we had to walk 1km with our luggage to a common pick up point of their choice.
We sent several messages through the app and called directly but never answered. In the Tripadvisor app they confirmed the booking and information only said that we will be picked up 2-4 hours before our flight time so we had no exact time or exact pick up location and
Since they took so long to reply or to inform us it was then to late to do the free of charge cancellation.
Our flight was on a Sunday at 10:30am which meant we needed to be picked up at 8am and their office only works mon-sat 9am to 6pm
They only replied to our messages on Saturday 4pm and advised that we will be picked up from 1 km away as it was not possible to pick us up closer to our location however every other boat and private taxis were able to get to our location easily without restrictions.
When we asked for an explanation why they were meeting us so far away they only said it was not possible.
In my opinion they are shifty and take advantage of the traveller by not giving enough to devise information well before the free cancellation period expires.

We paid 75 Euro for our family to ride the airport shuttle. Despite getting to our shuttle stop 1.5 hours before we needed to be at the airport some 20 minutes away, not one of the four shuttles that came could accommodate us (or the other irate travelers that queued on the dock). Staff told us more shuttles would be coming that could accommodate, which was not at all true. We were forced to take a private water taxi that I wish we would have just taken in the first place. Splitting that would have been the same cost to us without the aggravation. The Alilaguna staff then refused to refund what we paid. They'd be well advised to allow travelers to reserve seats in advance and up the game on their customer service. In the meantime, unless you're able to chance waiting hours for a space on a shuttle, stay away from this company and its shuttles with a 10 foot pole!

Easy transfer and good price however very hard to communicate as they don’t check or reply to messages. Our flight was delayed by 3 hours and we tried to contact them to let them know as we didn’t know if they would be open by the time we got there but they were not reachable. Did not answer calls or messages so this was very stressful for us.

Mestre Bus Station to Marco Polo Airport:
Take great care when buying tickets as two companies operate from here and their logo is virtually identical; same colours and font, slight change to one letter.
Three ticket machines were not working on site so I bought tickets from the kiosk selling drinks etc; €10 each which is the going rate.
We boarded the coach and then found a m/c on the coach where you could pay by card but we didn’t know this. Having said that, I didn’t see it issue a ticket!
After 5 mins, two guards boarded the coach & told us we had bought tickets for the other company and proceeded to issue a fine of €50 each plus €10 each for ticket costs. They would not just sell us a ticket!
They issued fines of this value to an elderly French couple who had purchased tickets for the correct company online the evening before, but because they hadn’t got a physical ticket (was on her phone) they fined them! It’s a racket!

Booked this taxi to travel from the airport to the Hilton Stucky hotel. This taxi is a incredible deal. Presented the PDF travel voucher from Trip advisor to the team at desk 71. We arrived at our hotel with no issues within a hour.

Great start to the visit, excellent value, wonderful experience and probably the quickest way of getting from the airport to Venice. I will use it next time, we had 6 couples on the boat, it was cosy but very sociable.

Worst ever at everything. We took tour to Murano, Burano, Torcello and they start late, but when some people were some seconds late they abandoned them on torcelo island!!!!!!! Even they saw them when the boat was leaving the port. Afterwards they left us in another port and another boat came to take us back and they were talking Italian and we couldn’t understand what was happening!

I was questioning if I was going to be happy with this company after some bad reviews, but we truly had a Jane’s Bond experience dodging other boats on the rough passageway. The young men we met and our captain was polite, a man a few words, but he knew his job well and how to navigate the busy waterways and canals, plus helping us on and off the boat, and our much heavy luggage. ❤️ it. We were amazed by how big and beautiful Venice is. Thankyou for a very memorable ride and will not hesitate to book with them going back to the mainland.
