For some reason, despite visiting Venice many times in the past, we have never visited San Giorgio. We had a bit of time left on our 72-hour ATCV pass so caught the no. 2 vaporetto from S. Zaccaria. The church was undergoing renovation but the...More

We took the #2 Vaporetto from the Piazzale Roma to San Giorgio around 9:00 one morning. The vaporetto was not crowded, so there were plenty of seats available for the ride out to the island. Part of the enjoyment for us was seeing the other...More

I had been recommended this island by a local, as somewhere to go to get good views of Venice. I went on a Sunday morning, early enough to miss the crowds - be aware it closes for mass, 10.40 till about 12.00- at least when...More

This lovely church by Palladio houses a lift from which you get the best view of the city. Get there late in the afternoon for the best sunlight.

Marvellous 360 degree view of Venice and the lagoon from the top of the campanile. It is worth going up, even when it's cloudy, but beware of the bells every 30 minutes!

There is almost NO wait for a trip up the tower to view Venice. We zipped to the top and spent a long time looking out each window. Every 1/2 hour the bells ring out! The Church is restful, the Vatican Chapels were wonderful. Walking...More

On our quick trip to Venice, we were advised to take a trip up to the bell tower of San Giorgio Maggiore, as it gives a view of St Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace, rather than climbing the bell tower of St. Marks and...More

Yes, and everywhere is beautiful. Make sure you go up the bell tower as well as viewing Tintoretto’s “Last Supper” ( which I found tricky to photograph due to placement of church “spot lights”). Enjoy.
