Neighbourhood: San Polo
The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighbourhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.

It is the second biggest square besides Piazza San Marco. It is nice with some trees. Around there are some shops for local people like pharmacy and also some restaurants and bars. Although the square is not on the main path of tourists, some of these restaurants nearby are tourist traps (at least one). Beside tourists, this square is also poulated by local people. On the southern side, you can find the famous church of San Polo. If you are not rushing to the main sights and want to enjoy the authentic Venice, this place is a good choice. The place is never crowded.

The only outdoor venue for the Venice Film Festival, the sound, screen registration and sightlines are , good for a sunny, late summer evening....Venice cinefiles crowd the square early to line up for tickets, then get drinks or dinner while waiting for the film to begin. We felt so lucky again to be staying right on Campo San Polo...

After arriving in Venice we decided to hit the beautiful streets. When we arrived at this square, we were charmed by the rustic buildings and festive feel with an ice skating rink and stalls selling warm wine and delicacies. What an absolute treat! A lovely spot to have spent an hour enjoying the warmish winter sun and the local treats.

Recorded music beckoned to us as we explored the San Polo area of Venice in mid-December at dusk. We followed the sound and came to a small ice rink at the edge of this big square, second only to St. Mark's in size. Just a few people skated, most holding onto the backs of orange-colored artificial seals that helped them to maintain balance. We watched for a while and then looked around the paved square..

Colorful buildings ringed the massive space, with one structure undergoing extensive renovations. Red benches invited people to sit, but only one man had accepted the offer on this cold evening. Two stalls sold food and drinks by tables and chairs set out for customers. About 20 people had gathered to eat their purchases. The nearby Chiesa di San Polo, founded in 837, showed off Byzantine, Gothic and Neoclassical architecture. Had the church not closed for the day, we would have entered to see its artwork, which includes paintings by Tintoretto, Tiepolo and Veronese.

This seemed more like a local than tourist area and a nice change from the usual crowds in central Venice. But large gatherings occur here, such as audiences for the summer cinema. The vibe would certainly be quite different then.

This spacious square is just off the main tourist route to and from the Rialto Bridge. But surprisingly, almost no tourists bother to visit this square; the only tourists I spotted crossed Campo San Polo with their trolleys on their way to the hotel. On this square children play, while their grandparents sit and read a magazine. During the Venice film festival, a open air cinema will be built on Campo San Polo. At the back of the square, a restaurant annex beer cafe offers a nice outdoor sit-down area. If you are unhurried, sit down on Campo San Polo for a while.

You will find nice palazzi on this busy place. In the former times there took place religious festivals, bull fights and theater performances. Today in the summer times it serves as an open-air cinema. Until the year of 1761 on the east side led a canal along, the course of which can still be clearly recognized by the tortuous line of the palazzi. Special interesting are the Palazzi Soranzo, two gothic city houses and the Palazzo Corner Mocenigo del century 16. The San Polo church you will find offside of the place with view to the Rio di San Polo.

This beautiful campo has an open air cinema in the summer and an ice rink in the winter! It is always a fun place to be with places to eat- the pizza place at the top corner is especially good.

This is just another ordinary square in Venice with no unique characteristics from other ordinary squares in town.

This is the City's biggest campo (square) but St Mark's Square is bigger because its a piazza. I think our guide knew that it would not be busy, maybe 20 people in all that area other than our group. There were some nice buildings, our guide kept up a commentary through our audios as we strolled through and into the next street. The Square dates to 1493, worth a visit if in the area and there are exciting events being staged.
