Great area of Venice...just across the grand canal with plenty of wee bars selling tapas style food as well as other lovely walks. Not far from the tourist attractions but far enough away to be slightly less expensive...well worth a visit.

If you have time and nothing to do go there, visit the shops and have some food either in a restaurant or a quick serving place.

This is a very underrated location in Venice with charming streets, small cozy bars and a couple of great restaurants. Even during the Carnival there were no crowds so we could get a genuine "Venice" experience with no need to work our elbows and watch our pockets every second. And the accommodation there is a lot more affordable than in... More

My hotel was in cannaregio, so I used this opportunity to get familiar with the neighbourhood. Just walking through all these allies and watching the ancient houses that peoplestill live in, is a great way to spend an afternoon in Venice

I prefer this area of Venice over the others! Less foot traffic, lower prices, and very relaxing. We had some of the best meals in this area, great for communing with the locals!

The first time I came to Venice, I stayed in a quiet historic hotel hidden in Cannaregio. It was a 20 minute walk to San Marco. We felt like we had a very authentic introduction to the city, staying in this neighborhood. (Not swarming with tourists)

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
