A region from the Venetians, friendly people willing to share there beauty with you. So typical, so quiet, so beautifull.

I stayed in Venice for a week, and spent a lot of time just walking around different districts - Cannaregio was my absolute favorite! It's quiet, authentic, and a perfect place to get lost in. The restaurants and cafés are a bit cheaper and you won't see too many tourists here. The highlight of this area was to walk around... More

This residential neighborhood is away from the tourist areas and is an authentic part of real-life Venice. It is a short walk from the train station and a little longer walk from St. Mark's Square. It was a nice stroll through the alleys here.

Stayed in this part of Venice.. I have to say this is by far the best place to be, off the beaten track tavernas and restaurants, and really characteristic buildings; quieter than the hustle and bustle of the main tourist areas.

There isn't really anything important to see in Cannaregio, but I suggest you just walk around, get lost and enjoy just being in Venice.

Our hotel was located in Cannaregio and we just loved this place. If your passionate about local culture then this is the right place .We ate at most of the restaurants where locals ate and had our best experience in Venice. Bar Puppa was our favourite!

If you want a taste of "authentic" Venice (or what's left of it) you gotta take a walk through Cannaregio. A few minutes from the train station, tons of reasonably priced restaurants and shops, yet if you walk north a couple blocks, you will have the streets all by yourself.

Get lost here. Every corner is another picturesque scene filled with life and love. We even got lost at night, and did not feel unsafe at all. Love the city and all it has to offer!

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
