Probably the quintessential mask shop in Venice. Amongst a plethora of offerings, this place stands out for its genuine handmade quality merchandise. The lovely owner sits at the front painting and decorating new creations, and happily offering advice on what to choose. There are a lot of cheap, imported mask shops in Venice, don't be fooled, just come to this... More

We were only at the Carnevale for 2 days, put took over 1000 photos, says it all really, great during the day, better at night even, makes all of central Venice like St Marc's Square and the caffes and bars even more period looking and romantic, don't hesitate to ask, 'PERMESO?', and all stop and pose to let you take... We had a sunny, rainy and a foggy day with the San Marco place flooded, but each was a great experience. We had our own mask for the show but during the last couple of days locals and tourist show off with marvelous dresses. Costume contest at or near San Marco square. People are friendly and try to embrace tourists... More

Carnival in Venice is one of the most happy and wonderful there! People walking around with costumes in the streets, the restaurants have a special menu for the carnival, all happy and fun!

Wonderful experience to experience Venice Carnival firsthand. Best to go early in the morning on the Piazza San Marco where they meet masks.

I always wanted to see the Venice carnevale and this year I finally went in Venice to see it. I must admit it is quite interesting, but on that days there is many crowds in the city that it was nice to see the masks but it was also nice to escape. So, for me visiting Venice carnevale once is... More

I admit, right off the bat, that Venice can do no wrong in my eyes, No matter how smelly, how crowded or how much a latte in Plaza San Marco, I am in love. I am biased. I've been there at Regata and Carnevale and if you love live pageant, dressing up, street life and Venice, then just go. We... More

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
