The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.

Our family stumbled upon this most amazing church. It may seem humble from the outside; however once inside I was overwhelmed by the paintings,
Just amazing.

Beautiful and free of charge. We were there at 7.30am and not a single soul in sight. Great place to pop in straight after arriving in the city

This is a fine example of a Baroque church in Venice.
The church is located next to the train station, which makes it extremely accessible and there's no excuse to miss it.

Next door to the Santa Lucia train station, this is a gorgeously decorated Baroque church that is entirely free to visit.

If you are from NW Europe or have a Protestant background this exuberant Baroque church feels perhaps a bit over the top. Consecrated in 1705 the construction of the church was part of an offensive by the Catholic hierarchy to win back hearts and minds. The period of the Counter-Reformation brought about many similar structures especially in Italy and Spain. If you walk inside you are immediately overwhelmed by the many different sculptures, the dense ornamentation and deep colours of painted works.

I particularly liked a sculpture of San Sebastian by Bernardo Falconi made in 1669. It is in the Venier chapel.

Odd, you have to exit the church by walking through a souvenir shop.

Close to the train station. Nice architecture and worth the visit. Really crowded. I think is a must if you visit Venezia.

The facade is in Baroque style and there are four first floor statues besides the statue of Virgin and child, statue of St Catherine of Siena and St Thomas Aquinas. In the interior, the first chapel to the right has a statue of St John of the Cross. The third Chapel on the left has a statue of St Sebastian with bronze bas reliefs . Look out for the organ with gilded decorations and reliefs, the main altar and choir ceiling.

This has to be one of the most beautiful churches in Venice. Lots of paintings on the interior and the architecture is impressive. Highly recommended

A quick visit to an absolutely beautiful church that is very close to the main tourist highway. The visit is free of charge although a donation is recommended. Unfortunately we somehow missed the gardens. The highlights include the six main sculptures and the incredibly decorative alter.
