What an experience! We just spent a fabulous day with Chef Franco Sanna at The Gritti Epicurean Cooking School. We started with a trip to the Rialto Market. Franco picked out the freshest seafood, fruits and vegetables. On the way back to The Gritti Palace, we stopped off in a local (ie non-touristy) bacaro for un'ombra of prosecco and a... More

I just came back from Venice and simply had to write a review of this cooking class. We attended a half-day course with a trip to the wonderful Rialto market in the morning and a relaxed and very informative few hours of cooking and admiring chef Franco's skills and love for food. He made us feel like we were his... More

Gritti Palace Epicurean School....Bravo Congatulazioni Chef Franco! Sei un artista! If you truly wish to understand the essence and feel of Venetian culture, the experience provided by chef Franco is priceless. The kitchen is the latest, state of the art and can easily make one envious. But it is chef Franco's passion, creativity and feel for the "marina" and the... More

A truly Epicurean experience and our best meal while in Italy. A great option if you have a day and want to do something different away from the crowds and tourist shopping. We spent the day with Chef Franco, a 15 year veteran chef of the Gritti Palace. We started our day at 9:15 am with a nice walk through... More

I spent two days with Chef Franco Sanna and could not have been happier. Our trip to the Rialto market to buy fresh ingredients was only the start. Chef Franco was very informative and helpful. The food that we prepared was fresh, light and flavorful. The wine and food parings for our lunches were molto bene. If you want to... More

This was our first experience with a cooking school and we loved every minute! Chef Franco is very personable. He is exacting in his discipline and also very easy going, fun and just delightful in every way. We loved the soft shell crab and enjoyed helping with the preparation, but each course stood on it's own! We were so fortunate... More

We want to the luxurious Gritti Palace Hotel for a wine tasting of three great and traditional Amarone wines: the setting was a blend of modern and classic, the atmosphere friendly and the explanation was thorough yet relaxed. Highly recommended to all wine enthusiasts!

Service was top notch. Rooms were top notch. Even though I had to pay for breakfast at 53 euros I thought it was worth it (twice) because just being on the grand canal was amazing. Very special experience and the best use of hotel points I can imagine

My sister-in-law and I were among the 6 people who took part in the October 14 half-day epicurean school. As noted by one of the participants, it lasted more than a half day, almost a full one, and was enjoyable every moment. Sous Chef Franco Sanna is a delight to observe as he works his magic in the beautifully designed... More

I've been to many cooking schools and lived in Europe for several years. This one requires a true shout out: Franco Sanna at Gritti Palace in Venice. It was a special birthday for a dear friend and we spent the day with Franco in the fish market and at some local cafes. The experience, as well as the cooking demonstration... More

Staying in Dorsoduro / Accademia

Neighbourhood Profile
Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.
