Having arrived in Venice at around midday, and not being able to check in to the hotel until 14.00, we had a wander around the local streets and had a coffee in Campo Santa Margherita - a large square. We then wandered down to what looked like a dead end corner and saw the banner stands advertising the 4 seasons... More

We made our booking through Europera Ticket for the VIP treatment to the opera and dinner. The only way I can describe the meal was inedible and disgusting. The tickets we booked for the opera where supposed to be VIP tickets but instead we where sat in seats that we couldn't see the stage. The performance itself was beautiful and... More

Went here in February first time me and the wife have seen an opera not what we were expecting performed in a room like a mini church seating was quite small and on the flat but could see well as we were in the back row. Booked the opera with dinner but do not have the meal not worth the... More

I was taken here by a friend who had come upon it whilst strolling through Dorsoduro on her last visit to Venice ... not on the main tourist route ... in fact a world away ...a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere in which which to admire the wonderful ceiling paintings and reflect on what Venice is really about.

The Scuola dei Carmini, located near the Campo Santa Marguerita, was easy to find in the Dorsoduro district. The draw was the opportunity to see 9 paintings by Tiepolo whose style of painting contrasts with the older Venetian artists. These paintings were found in the scuola's ceiling decor of the upper hall at the top of a balustraded staircase. Tiepolo's... More

Went to the above last night. What an embarrassment. Opera arias with ballet interludes. Worse than a school production. The musicians, particularly the cellist, were beyond terrible. Even the well known arias were almost unrecognisable. And to top it all, tickets were pushing £50 each. This is nothing more than a tourist trap that does not rely on repeat business.... More

Attended a operatic review of arias by various composers in the chapel of this facility recently. The performances were wonderful and the sound was excellent. Located in a quiet neighborhood, we felt secure at night after the concert as we returned to our lodging. If you see that a music event is occuring at this school, try to attend.

We attended the regular concert here which was a real hoot with lots of our favourite opera and ballet items. We enjoyed it very much in very relaxed surroundings. The Scuola is a beautiful setting; the musicians in their Venetian masks were excellent as were the singers and the dancer. We had been to Madam Butterfly at la Fenice, Rigaletto... More

The Scuola Grande dei Carmini is not as grand as Scuola Grande San Rocco: a more intimate affair but definitely one of the Venetian Scuole Grandi well worth a visit. The Scuola Grande dei Carmini is situated in the sestriere of Dorsoduro near the very popular Campo Santa Margherita where many young people congregate in the evening. Founded and to... More

Wonderful show tonight with excellent tenor and soprano, and we thought the ballet dancer was also very good. Small group of masked string players and harpist gave the right atmosphere to this intimate setting. Perhaps the musicians have changed since the last review in 2014; go and see it, you won't be disappointed, and the audience obviously enjoyed it with... More

Staying in Dorsoduro / Accademia

Neighbourhood Profile
Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.
