Palladio designed the facade of this Franciscan church. Inside there are a Madonna by Bellini as well as the first work of art done by Veronese in Venice.

The first church in Venice where I really felt the solemnity and beauty of the atmosphere. Try to see also all the chapels and the quiet gardens.

We found this monumental church by accident, as we wandered through the back calli (local name for pedestrian streets), in the Venezia that few tourists ever venture to see. The calling card for the church, and what made us stop, is the monumental facade built...More

The church is sort of hidden away in the north of Castello on a not to often beaten track. The outside is not imposing but inside it is simplistically beautiful (no entrance charge either). As well as the notable Bellini's Virgin and Child painting there...More

Entrance to this big church is free of charge. But in front of each significant painting is a box where you pay 0,50 cents to turn light on. Of course, you can wait that someone else pay, and then you can admire the artwork of...More

The church has a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere with very harmonious proportions. Depending on which version of history you believe, it was designed around De harmonia mundi's principle of three as a magical number or around the number seven. In either (or neither) case, the spacious...More

The second Franciscan church in Venice (the other is Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari), San Francesco della Vigna, is a Renaissance church that replaced a previous Gothic church. Built from 1534 to 1554 and designed by Jacopo Sansovino, the church reflects the reform movement of...More

Wandering off the beaten track in Venice, following the lead of a friend with a guidebook and a strong interest in old churches, we discovered the church of San Francesco della Vigna. This church was established as a Franciscan monastery on a former vineyard donated...More

Walking around Venice we found this lovely church. It is beautifully decorated inside with paintings from Franco, Zuccari, Fontebasso, Maggiotto, Lombardo, Tintoretto and others. I have only found later it is one of two Franciscan churches in Venice, the other one being Santa Maria Gloriosa...More

The church of San Francesco della Vigna, which lies completely off the beaten track in the Castello district of the city, is worth seeking out, if only to see the beautiful altarpiece by Fra Antonio da Negroponte. The painting depicts the Virgin and Child Enthroned...More

Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri

one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime
neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side
streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals
